DC “only” has ~2.1 million inside the Capital Beltway which is 326 sq/mi in area for context. In 228 sq/mi it’s closer to 1.7 million. DC + PG county have what? 350-360 homicides so that gives us at rate of +21/100k
I get MDs point about boundaries mattering. If DC still included Arlington it's statistical rate would be lower (although still very high) despite nothing being different in the real world.
But DC is pretty high regardless of how you slice it.
Chicago isn't exactly an exemplar. Inside the beltway DC has basically as many murders as NYC or LA have with larger populations and a lot more poor people.
That depends which direction you go. If you go into Virginia instead of Prince George's county to get 228 sq. miles, it's a fraction of the rate. The DC metro is very segregated and the Anacostia River is a major buffer for homicides.
It really isn’t though DC has 100 homicides of the west side of the Anacostia.

True, but last year there were 63 YTD west of the river. This year is an anomaly historically. West of the river historically with Arlington and Alexandria is about the same as Boston.

Well, and Ward 5...the concentration of homicides Brookland Manor area is just insane.
That being said NE DC is definitely seeing gentrification pain - definitely more crimes in areas like Columbia Heights or Brookland with gentrification slowed down somewhat during the pandemic.

I get pointing out murders are concentrated in certain areas and how it can vary by neighborhood. But, murders tend to be clustered in most cities. For example, Boston has it's so called murder triangle. Over a 1 year period from August, 39 of the 46 homicides in Boston occurred in the triangle.
Too bad NYC had a triple-murder today -- landlord killed three tenants over rent dispute.....smh
There has to be more to that story.
How does someone enter a home, stab a person downstairs without making any noise, walk upstairs without alerting anyone and kill 2 more people in separate rooms?

A shame to see the homicide rates going crazy again in Brookland. It was a dangerous area when I lived and went to school there in the mid-late 90's. I went back recently and they've definitely improved the look of the area in parts but a lot of work remains.

Other way around. It was actually a couple in the downstairs bedroom and then his girlfriend was upstairs. He was their landlord so I'm sure he had easy access to enter and was familiar enough with the place to get around easily and quietly.
