You think the likes of Atlanta, Miami, Nashville, Charlotte and Tampa are equivalent to the likes of Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Hartford, Providence and DC? Those are some high hopes.
I think the South can match up to the West or Midwest (when you factor in the Texas cities) but even with the Texas Cities the NE is still the king

Charlotte( 3 million) and Nashville( 2.1 million) are already legitimate major cities ...but the problem is there aren't alot of in between built up cities...

Barring some natural disaster I honestly don’t see the southeast competing with the financial and political hubs of this country. I still think the collection of west coast cities are holding down the #2 spot for the time being.
I'd sure hope it doesn't physically become connected / the smokies should still have trees on them! That area of the country really needs more forests, not less.
Birmingham toto Raleigh is almost a cohesive group, but S Georgia is big and the two sides of the Appalachians will always be separated.

Yep, South Georgia is big. It’s 6hrs between Atlanta and Tampa, with almost nothing in between. They’re not connected and not really the same region.

Nashville to Miami is 910 miles by car, compared to 438 miles by car DC to Boston. It seems like the only way for a hypothetical megalopolis that rivals the Bos-Wash corridor between Nashville (or Charlotte) and Miami is a significant sea level rise that wipes out the NE entirely, followed by everyone in unison deciding to migrate along the Nashville/Atlanta/Tampa/Miami corridor. In this scenario, Miami is somehow spared a similar destruction, but if it isn't, we'll say Orlando replaces Miami. Valdosta, Chattanooga, Huntsville and Macon all become major cities in their own right in this scenario.

Well, you're even more optimistic than I am. Even with all that, I don't see it ever happening. No city at risk of hurricanes, and/or a sea level rise (Miami)will ever take the place of a major city in the NE.
