Last time I visited Chicago it felt like NYC feels on a quiet holiday weekend (I'm obv not talking about Times Square and tourist areas).

Chicago probably wins in property and casualty insurance. New York maybe in everything else

Financial services does not necessarily only relate to the NYSE or big bank headquarters. Financial Reporting, regulation and compliance spans many industries, which I'm sure you're aware of, and Chicago has plenty of headquarters and large regional offices. My first year in Chicago was as a contract employee, first for a regional bank, next with an insurance giant, then hired FT by the bank. There was always an opportunity waiting for me. While the compensation will be less in Chicago, so will the COL. The rat race and everyday hassles will be reduced in Chicago. The gay population is certainly there and available in two large and attractive neighborhoods of the city, as are popular bars and restaurants. Chicago has more green space and breathing room. The lakefront is such a spectacular asset and that water - in the sun - is the most beautiful shade of blue/green you will see. Might be time for a change for you - even if just for awhile.
Yup, with some of the normal bashers moving in with their wonderful opinions and passive-aggressive bashing. It's old and tired.

It may depend on the specific kind of financial job. If it is commodities, Chicago is the way to go. If stocks and bonds, NYC is the way to go.

Maybe consider San Francisco. Isn't there some kind of exchange there?

Especially due to him being a contract employee and those jobs being easier to acquire than regular employee jobs.
