Depends what you want out of the vacation.

Do you want to party hard every night? South Beach.

Do you want to kick back, relax and go surfing? Waikiki Beach.

Which has:

1. Better beach
2. Better nightlife
3. Better food
4. Better accommodations/lodging
5. Better activities/local culture
1. Waikiki
2. South Beach
3. South Beach
4. Tie
5. Waikiki

Although South Beach is a beautiful destination it just is not quite at the level of Waikiki. Waikiki is simply tropical paradise in an urban environment with stunning scenery. South Beach may have more nightlife options but Waikiki definitely offers enough. If travel time was not a consideration then Waikiki wins hands down. However, if you live on the east coast then South Beach would be a much easier trip.

This pretty much.
Basically, once you outgrow the reckless constant party phase of adulthood, South Beach gets old, VERY fast.

Also have to agree with this:

Honolulu is a tad remote. At least from SoBe you can drive to other places within the metro, state and out of state.

I don’t have to get on a plane to attend big 4 professional sporting events—as short as a 15 minute drive.
