Chicago is the least overrated. I think Los Angeles is missunderstood. I think Atlanta has to be the most grossly overrated city in the country. There is not one nice thing I can think of about it.
I wouldnt say chicago is overated in the real wolrd, because no one really rates it. Its just another midwestern city to coastal people, but on city-data its definetely overrated.
In real life I'd say Atlanta or Dallas, two boring cities that suck

Okay and what about non-coastal people?? Now places like ATL or MIA are the real overated cities.
They're overpriced because they're in New York and total dumps.
You mean the cities in upstate New York? Don't be fooled 'cause they're in the same state as NYC - they're actually really, really cheap. Mostly because the economy there sucks. Also, Albany is a dump, and I've heard that Syracuse and Buffalo are dumps (though I've never been). I've actually heard more good things about Rochester, surprisingly.
I actually think Upstate NY is, in general, underrated, if anything. It's true, most of the cities are pretty dumpy, but the non-urban areas are actually quite beautiful.
I think all of them are over hyped to some extent. I mean all of them pretty much have the same or similar amenities (bars and restaurants, nightclubs parks, museums, etc), some more than others, but eventually you may get to some extent, at least I know I would.
I haven't been to that many cities, but me personally, I think Seattle is a little bit overhyped by the media. Not to say it's not a good city, but watching TV and reading the Forbes "Best places to live list", you would think it was paradise or something. When my co-workers and I went, we had really high expectation, but were kind of let down I guess when we got there. The downtown area and the city's neighborhoods are nice, along with the water and scenary, but the area (like a lot of places), but there was a lot of traffic and the homelessness, along with everything being so expensive.
Yeah...now that I'm thinking about the original question, I don't really know how to answer it.
I'd say LA, but LA probably has more haters than anywhere else (it seems to be one of those places that people either love or hate).
I do think Boston is a little overrated, but it's still cool, so I have difficulty saying it's "the most overrated city in America."
Chicago and DC are, if anything, slightly underrated.
NYC isn't overrated. It is, however, very hyped, which leads to a lot of misconceptions. But if you look at it for what it really is, it's just as awesome as the hype says, only different.
SF also seems to live up to the hype. I don't know it like I know NYC, though, so I can't comment on misconceptions.
Atlanta? Eh. It doesn't seem to be rated that often.
Orlando? Who gets worked up about Orlando? I think most people realize it's mostly just theme parks and mild winters.
Never been to Miami or Vegas, so maybe them.
