Much like the debate on which city feels more Southern between Atlanta and NOVA, or Atlanta and Richmond, I figured I'd ask which city feels more American between Atlanta and San Diego. This should be a close poll and a tough call since they both are more like typical American cities with their suburban sprawl and not as European or Asian influenced like cities such as New York or San Francisco. Overall, I'll say San Diego since it's a military town, therefore it has a lot of patriotism and a lot of traditional American values.
I went with Atlanta because San Diego has a HUGE Mexican influence (or at least that's what I observed when I was there 1 1/2 years ago). That actually isn't surprising considering the international border is about 15 miles away.

Yes, but surprisingly, the Mexican or Hispanic population of San Diego city proper is low for it's proximity to the border, like around 25%. Suburban cities such as Chula Vista and El Cajon have a larger Mexican population. I do see the Mexican influence as far as architecture (style of houses) as well as the food.
When I consider cities in questions like the one posed in this poll, I tend to consider the metro area, not just the city itself; the development patterns of a city don't automatically stop at the city limits, unless there is some sort of physical feature/barrier. I say that in part because the part of San Diego I saw the most during my visit was the area east of the downtown area (including El Cajon), along with downtown itself. All of that is "San Diego" to a non-native.
