You were pretty far in then! But, I'm guessing not one person messed with you, right?

Don't know if you've ever headed South on Hwy 37 towards Playa del Carmen, but there are pockets of what you saw down that way also.

Nah, they really weren't two intrigued with two out of town white dudes, lol. I did go south on 37 in a tour bus to go snorkeling, and yes, it's definitely 3rd world in certain parts. It's too bad, such a cool country side.

Is Jonestown anywhere near Laurel? I was in Laurel recently, and parts of it were pretty skeevy.

Fulton avenue is West Baltimore. Pure blight and poverty.
Parts of West Philly by the Market Street Elevated.
Parts of North Philly.

Good photos of North Philly there Brickboy, North Philly, Kensington etc is the worst urban blight I've seen.

I found this photoset (not my photos) on flickr that also shows the type of environment in North Philly.

North Philadelphia - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/eugenemartin/sets/1615267/ - broken link)

Of course, every city has it's spots that are seriously blighted to a certain degree, but for me Philly and across the river Camden takes the biscuit.
