Umm, I would say about a half hour in(don't know exactly where I was as I had gotten on the wrong bus, lol). The downtown wasn't the worst part. It was the neighborhoods. Very, very run down. Mandy homes were made out of random materials, most had tin sheet roofing, and trash was littered EVERYWHERE.
You were pretty far in then! But, I'm guessing not one person messed with you, right?
Don't know if you've ever headed South on Hwy 37 towards Playa del Carmen, but there are pockets of what you saw down that way also.

Nah, they really weren't two intrigued with two out of town white dudes, lol. I did go south on 37 in a tour bus to go snorkeling, and yes, it's definitely 3rd world in certain parts. It's too bad, such a cool country side.

Good photos of North Philly there Brickboy, North Philly, Kensington etc is the worst urban blight I've seen.
I found this photoset (not my photos) on flickr that also shows the type of environment in North Philly.

Of course, every city has it's spots that are seriously blighted to a certain degree, but for me Philly and across the river Camden takes the biscuit.
