Got so bad that when she tried walking to the grocery store a couple blocks over on Genessee St, the cops escorted her home and told her not to walk in the neighborhood any more (she didn't drive). Her funeral was at the family church, St Monica's, and it angered me to see the gang grafitti sprayed all over that beautiful, once proud church. It's a damn shame that we Americans so easily toss away vibrant, comforatble communities.
Rochester is not a total loss though. Yes, "the Crescent", the area that goes from NE of Downtown west to SW of Downtown, is where most of the crime is. There are still plenty of nice neighborhoods in Rochester. From what I hear, the 14621 area is the one to avoid. Northland-Lyceum seems to be fine still. I think it depends on where on Clifford you go too.

As I remember and as my friends back there tell me, anywhere South of 104, North of the inner loop, West of Culver and East of the river are terrible. I do agree that some parts of Rochester are wonderful like Corn Hill, Park and East Aves, Winton Village, Charlotte, however there is way too much ghetto, violence and poverty. I really wish they could fix those problems up there

That's the same people here in Syracuse say about certain areas, as well as others about the Upstate cities. As bad as people think it is and it is real, there are much worse cities. I do understand your point, as I've driven down Goodman going to Irondequoit. What's weird is that the further away from Downtown you drive the steadily better it gets. That's why I said that Northland-Lyceum is still nice.

BTW- Did you go to Franklin or East?

I always thought that Syracuse was alot better than The Roc or Buffalo for crime though. Either way, you are right that there are places that are much worse

I assume you mean high school. No, I actually went to Spencerport, then graduated and lived in the city for about 18 months before going to Texas for college and now work.

We are definitely not immune to grimey areas down here. Some of the ghettos on the North and Southwest sides of Houston are nasty here

Got ya.... I'm surprised you didn't do the East Ave./Park Ave. area. I guess Swillburg is on the up and up too. Parts of Monroe Ave. are fine too. Charlotte and Maplewood have come along.

At the time, i couldn't afford any better so I lived off lexington near Dewey (not good at all, got propositioned by hookers every night). Would have loved living on Park that's for sure. Charlotte has always been one of my favorites, many memories down there. I have heard that Maplewood is getting nicer. That park by the Genessee River where you walk down to view the lower falls is so cool

Thats true but I'd put it at west of Goodman. People hear the word Clifford Ave and automatically think ghetto. I grew up in that area and while some of my older neighborhoods aren't that great, I still have family in the area around the part near Savoias and its fine.

I guess it depends on your age. I'm old enough to have lived in the city before its decline. When I was a kid in the 60s, the only "bad" areas were around Joseph on the east side, and around S. Plymouth and Jefferson on the west side. We lived in what today is called North Winton Village (we didn't have a name for it back then), which was lower middle to middle class (upper middle south of Browncroft). I understand it is still that way and still desirable, which is great, but it hurts to see such huge swaths of the city in the condition they are in compared to my childhood. My grandfather's neighborhood (Clifford/Goodman) and my grandmother's neighborhoods (Dutchtown and later 19th Ward) were blue collar, but very safe and liveable. My parents had no qualms about letting us ride the bus or walk in those areas.

Its funny, right where Empire turns to Clifford is night and day difference. Grandparents live couple blocks east of St. Ambrose... have been Savoias customers for as long as I can remember. I used to work part time over by Portland and Clifford... pretty rough. Owner had an arsenal of weapons placed all over the shop, we were ready for WWIII.

Buffalo is much like and perhaps even worse than Rochester.
