Swine flu spreads faster, but is less lethal. Bird flu spreads less, but is more lethal.
Swine flu won't be the disaster everyone is hyping it up to be because it just doesn't have the lethality. Hundreds of deaths in Mexico could just be ascribed to the 1,600 confirmed cases compared to only 300 in the rest of the world, meaning that the kill ratio of the virus is so low that we don't have enough cases elsewhere to see any deaths.
Also, we're better prepared for it. We knew about it when it had yet to migrate from Mexico and since we're not 'ground zero' all we have to do is quarantine all the people who have been confirmed to have been to 'ground zero' and we can dramatically stop the spread.
We also have better access to health facilities.
So no, based on the currently available information, this won't turn into a pandemic(at least as far as lethality is concerned). But it does give you pause. What if this disease had been deadlier? What if it evolves into a more deadly strain?
Swine flu has to kill as many ppl as the regular flu before we start worrying about it...
I've heard that the 2nd strand will be way more potent than the 1st.
