Which city has more railroad (all tracks) total combined? I know the answer but I'm curious as to what everyone else knows. You have freight yards and passenger volumes. Which city is The king rail hub of the nation? Also explain why you think that city is the hub.

Chicago, by far, is the bigger freight rail hub.

NYC proper is not a major freight rail hub. There is very little freight passing through NYC proper, because of high costs, and existing tracks being utilized for passenger service.

And most of the NYC-area freight rail is on the NJ side, because that's the mainland, and the gateway to the rest of the country. The port facilities are mostly on the NJ side, and primarily use freight.

And in Chicagoland, the commuter rail service isn't very high frequency, so there's capacity for extensive freight operations. In metro NYC, the commuter rail is much higher frequency, and usually third-rail, subway style operation. It does not have the capacity to accomodate freight.

I guess, even though the last two posters chose Chicago, one voted for NYC, because I am, so far, the only vote for Chicago.

It does make me wonder that if Chicago wanted to it could easily convert more freight railroad tracks to become the nation's largest commuter passenger system in the country.

Chicago already runs commuter rail on all the major lines heading out from downtown.

So, no, it could never have the largest system, unless the commuter rail extended out to Iowa or something.

Impossible unless Chicago triples in population. Every living person in Chicago could hop on a train right now and it wouldn't top the daily commute of NYC.

This. New York City metro area has more train riders than every other city in the country COMBINED.
