As you can see, I currently live in NYS. I am originally from Sacramento, and a former resident of LA as well. NYC chumps any individual city in this country, maybe the world. However, as a state, this isnt even close. This thread is long enough to explain the reasons why. For those of you who know no better, just take my word for it. New York is a decent state, but California is extraordinary. With NYC, speaking of NYS as it is, it still 15-16 million people less than Cali, right? If anybody has ever been up here, they would know that NY is basically PA or TN or another average state that just so happens to have "The City". It is a very average state, very bland and behind the times, and compared to most states it is equal or above. But compared to California...this is California we're talking about. This isnt even close or fair...
You do realize that NY is 30th in land size, while CA is 3rd in land size? Then, you have to consider that unlike CA metros, which are self contained within CA, the NYC metro flows over 3 or 4 states. So, that is why population growth gets effected in regards to NY State.
Plus, you live in Elmira. No disrespect to that city, but it would be like living in say Salinas in CA. Granted that Elmira isn't as rough, but other parts of NYS vary is what I'm getting at. By the way, why not check out Corning or Ithaca? While small still, at least Corning has a small, but notable and close knit Black community, including professionals due to Corning Inc. Ithaca has great diversity and things to do, along with some good events. If that doesn't do it for you, then one of the bigger metros may work. For instance, if you want a nice suburb with diversity in Upstate NY, I'd say look at areas of towns like Henrietta, Amherst or DeWitt, among some others. I only mention this as people from Sacramento are use to a high level of diversity. It may not be the same, but it is available up here.
Seems like someone revived this thread just to beat on NY.
ITA! Plus, it was bumped by someone from California. FWIW I still think NYS held it's own in comparison, especially given the land size between the two states.

Pretty sad. No need to revive threads for the purpose of beating up a state or city. Silliness.
2 certified global cities, 3 other really large up-and-coming global cities, almost every single climate offered in the US, Technological powerhouse of the US, innovation powerhouse of the US, world-class beaches. There's no wrong choice in this thread, but it's not so hard to see why CA would be winning. I wouldn't be surprised if NY won though, but CA winning isn't far-fetched. Unless your post was being sarcastic.
California lacks an "urban mountain" keep dreaming.
You tried that one on the last page...
