I like that Albuquerque doesn't depend on sports franchises and shopping places like Nordstroms, et al., for its self-respect. Most Albuquerqueans who need those things to enjoy where they live, move to places like Phoenix.
Personally, I'm sure that Phoenix has a lot to enjoy and a lot to be proud of, but the weather... I could just never live there.

I like how (actually I don't) all of the Albuquerque posters have to respond to the OP's question by dogging Phoenix, Arizona, or other desert cities. What's up with that? Is there really nothing nice about Albuquerque? Sell us on what it has, not what it doesn't have.

I dont wanna sell too many people on ABQ cause I dont want alot of people to be moving here creating more sprawl and crowded roads plus bringing their East Coast or California ways here. The last thing I would want is for ABQ to lose its identity,culture and character.
anyways............... What I like about ABQ and what it has going for it.
I know not too many people will read this cause most people dont give a crap about ABQ or PHX.
1.Mid-Sized City
2.The mountains on one side and desert on the other,best of both worlds
3.Its not as brown as the other desert cities
4.It has the Rio Grande flowing through the middle of the city
5.minor league sports and NCAA sports
6.The mix of NM culture(Anglo,Spanish,Native American),character and an old history.

Both states are great, with lots of natural beauty and open spaces. Arizona has some things that New Mexico doesn't have, and New Mexico has some things that Arizona doesn't have. Arizona has a very large metro area in Phoenix. That's either a pro or a con depending on your outlook. Arizona has hotter summers, New Mexico has colder winters . . . it's a matter of priority.
Having pointed out the differences, I would also say that the two states are more similar than they are different. Personal preferences should be the determing factor, and I don't think we should be second-guessing someone else's priorities.
I'm looking to move from MD to either AZ or NM. I love MD, but I'm getting tired of the cold winters! I'm 24 years old (just graduated from graduate school). Should I move to New Mexico or Arizona? And which areas should I look into? Here's my criteria:
-Lots of sunshine and warm weather.
-Near the water (lake, river, etc)
-Lots of young people (20s-early 30s)
-Job opportunities in the field of speech pathology
-Low crime
-Good schools
-Either a big city or small town/city near a bigger city

I would suggest Tempe, AZ. It is a college town with lots and lots of young people. ASU is either the first or second largest university in the US.
There are al least 3 lakes within an hour or so drive. The Salt River is less than an hour away. The forests of northern Arizona are only a 2-3 hour drive.
I have to caution you though as it is 110 degrees today. It is a dry heat, but so is my oven.
Your going to have a hard time with being near a lake. There may be a lake just north of Phoenix if I remember correctly, and there's a small lake north of Albuquerque called Cochiti. Elephant Butte is a few hours south of Albuquerque. A river flows right through Albuquerque, but it may be a joke considering that you're coming from Maryland. Lots of sunshine and warm weather would apply to almost anywhere. Arizona tends to be a little hotter than New Mexico, but it can get pretty cold in higher elevation towns (Flagstaff, Santa Fe, Taos, etc.). You'll probably find lots of young people around the universities in the cities, U of A in Tucson, UNM in Albuquerque...
Well you will definitely get warm weather out here but where you decide to land can be influenced by how warm you are looking for in Arizona since some places are much cooler than others. In referencing the Phoenix metro area specifically there isn't a lot in the way of being near water. There was a big boom here in the early 2000's so there are plenty of young people in my opinion. As far as low crime, as any place it depends on the area you are looking at. I can not speak from experience when it comes to New Mexico on most of this but with our state having major sports franchises I think it has definitely brought a lot to the state where New Mexico may be lacking. However, our schools are some of the last in the nation. I was born in Maryland and it's beautiful out there from what I have seen on a visit back but I am with you on not being able to tolerate the cold! And sunshine...we have endless amounts of it and it is a great mood elevator!
