When you add in Hong Kong's natural landscape, it simply can not be beat. Those mountains are amazing. Chicago is flat which is why skyscraper development has been so amazing there but for Hong Kong to be built up between the ocean and a mountain range, like it has, is a real structual achievement.

It is definitely very modern. 40 years ago HK didn't have a skyline at all. Chicago definitely has HK beat when it comes to beautiful old skyscrapers.

Here's Hong Kong's "skyline" in 1967:

Hong Kong's skyline today from the same vantage point:

I'm going with Chicago because I'm a big believer in quality over quantity.

There's a LOT of quality in HK. The big advantage I give Chicago is the differing generations of buildings which really adds to the diversity in architectural styles in the skyline. However, Hong Kong has two of my favorite modern skyscrapers (2 International Finance Center and the Bank of China Tower). It's a tough call, but in the end I have to give the nod to HK.

The only way hong kong is even able to compete is because of the uncalled for amount of residential buildings

How is it uncalled for? HK is TINY (400 square miles--most of it very mountainous) but has nearly 7 million people. They need lots and lots of high-rises.

When I lived in HK I was on the 10th floor of an apartment block overlooking Tolo Harbour in the New Territories. It was magnificent. But my favorite apartment towers in HK are these two jewels perched on a ridge separating Hong Kong's Happy Valley with Deepwater Bay:

And here we have one of the few areas of HK that isn't dominated by high-rise apartment blocks. It's just on the other side of the mountain from "downtown" Hong Kong:

Im saying though. Residential buildings make up a good chunk of the skyline. Does hk even have suburbs?. Point is when u look at hk its all glitz and glamour, and yes u can appreciate that. But looking at chicago is like looking at history. It doesnt need all the glitter to be impressive. They got famous buildings both old and new. As the avg american to name a building from hong kon/ Hong kong doesnt have that. The top two skylines are ny and chicago. Hong kong is just glitz and glamour and not as authentic as either one of them. Amd im tired of all this hong kong stuff
