I went to Charleston for my first time a few months after Hugo hit. Stayed at the Holiday Inn on Folly Beach and it was still in shreds. Was surprised they hadn't fixed the place quicker, but the curtains in the room still had slits in them like someone cut them with razor blades where the sliding door glass had broke and tore through them from the hurricane. Lots of stuff tore down along the beach, with rebuilding, etc. Took about 5 years for them to really get things looking "normal" again.
It bounced back, though. I really like going there (except in Summer when the heat/humidity can kill normal people). Too bad it's a 5 1/2 hour drive from where I live now or I'd go much more often. Of course, "my" Charleston is a 9 hour drive, so I guess that's not so bad.
