To really judge, one must know who came from where. Personally, I would guess the two big cities win as usual, but IMO, LA probably has produced more great rock bands than any other city. NYC of course is great at everything, and many others have significant contributions including SF, SEA, DET (counting Motown), NOLA, Nashville (country) and Memphis (blues).

Anyways one thing I know about is the Boston Music scene. Maybe we haven't delivered like the UK, but I'd say BOS has an impressive musical resume:

* Arthur Fielder
* Aerosmith -- Band
* Bell Biv DeVoe -- Music Group
* Boston -- Band
* Bobby Brown -- singer
* Tracy Chapman
* The Cars -- Band
* Evan Dando / Lemonheads -- Musician
* Dinosaur Jr. -- Band
* Dream Theater
* Dresden Dolls -- Punk-Cabaret Duo
* Dropkick Murphys -- Band
* Extreme -- Band
* Godsmack -- Band
* Guster -- Band
* J Geils Band
* JoJo -- Singer, Actress
* Killswitch Engage -- Metalcore Band
* Marky Mark (Wahlberg) and the Funky Bunch -- Rap Group
* John Mayer -- Singer/Songwriter
* Pat Metheney Jazz Great / Berklee Professor
* The Mighty Mighty Bosstones -- Band
* New Edition -- Music Group
* Donnie Wahlberg / New Kids on the Block -- Band.
* Powerman 5000 -- Metal Band
* The Pixies -- Band
* Sebadoh
* Staind
* Til Tuesday/ Aimee Mann
* Donna Summer -- Singer
* James Taylor -- Folk singer
* John Williams: Boston Pops (Jaws, Star Wars)
Steve Vai

Throwing in the Berklee-ites, you have to add:

Quincy Jones, pianists Bruce Hornsby, Keith Jarrett, Hiromi Uehara, and Diana Krall, guitarists John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Rivers Cuomo, Ian Thornley, Kevin Eubanks, Shane Gibson, John Mayer, John Scofield, Paula Cole, Bruce Cockburn, Gavin DeGraw, Tracy Bonham, and Melissa Etheridge, film scorers Alan Silvestri and Howard Shore, jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis

I'd like to see people from other cities list the bands that came out of there.

My NYC favorites when it comes to rock music:

- The Velvet Underground
- Lou Reed
- Bob Dylan
- Talking Heads
- Television
- Suicide
- Sonic Youth
- James Chance
- Swans
- Glenn Branca
- TV on the Radio
- LCD Soundsystem
- Blonde Redhead
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
- Dirty Projectors
- John Zorn

These are the ones I like best, though there have been a lot of other prominent bands out of NYC

New York undoubtedly produced the most influential and innovative. Dylan, Ramones, Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth and the rest of No wave, etc.. Essentially the artists and bands that have arguably been the most imitated. They are also producing most of the new independent and innovative music, although there isn't near the dominance that once existed.

I find it pathetic how rap and r&b topics get far more attention than rock topics in this forum. I honestly think that rock n roll music has so much to offer compared to rap. The biggest rappers nothing compared to the biggest rock bands. I am a HUGE Guns n Roses fan

Yes, the new album has a lot of great music. But to say it is debateably their best is stretching it too far. The original Guns n' Roses will always be the Guns n' Roses people think of. Besides, I am a HUGE fan of Slash...and his absence to the current GnR line-up has always been a big let down to me.

I like Slash too but I can enjoy his guitar playing regardless of who he's with. However, I do think Axl's Chinese Democracy is far and away superior to anything else any of the other gunners have put out. And it right ought to be! 13 years of dedicated work by the collective effort of more than a hundred great musicians and producers darn well ought to be good. And I dare say it is all that!
