One of them upstate towns. Probably has a significant history/impact. Quick research (30 seconds) reveals a town that definitely in decline.

Small city outside Boston with a massive latino population and a strong hip hop scene.

Tiny town in the coastal lowlands. I don't know anything about it other than its location, but I'm sure it's lovely.

Never heard of it. I imagine it is quite boring and flat, but could be wrong.

-by-the-Sea. Clint Eastwood was its mayor for a while. One of those too-cute-for-words towns tourists love.

FWIW, Fulton, Mo., is in the hillier eastern part of the state, and Missouri doesn't have real plains like you find beginning on Kansas City's southwest fringe. It's home to Westminster College, where Winston Churchill delivered his famous "Iron Curtain" speech in 1945. You'll find both a reconstructed London chapel and a chunk of the Berlin Wall on the campus, both commemorating Churchill’s visit. It's also not far from Bagnell Dam, behind which you find the Lake of the Ozarks, the great vacation playground of the Central Plains states.

Independence, Mo.

This was selected not too long ago, but for me, the starting point of the Oregon Trail (and several others) is the first thing that came to mind, ever since I first heard of it as a second grader. Matt and his general store probably is long gone, but the historic town square still maintains much of its charm. A fairly pleasant, if sprawling suburb of KC nowadays. Speaking of the trail:

Oregon City, OR
