No kidding! I can't believe that there's someone out there who actually thinks Memphis and Nashville aren't Southern.

But relating this to the topic of the thread, Memphis actually has a lot more downtown residents than Nashville. Most estimates I've seen put Nashville's downtown population at 4,000 - 10,000 while Memphis has 20,000 - 30,000. Nashville certainly has more downtown workers than Memphis, but Memphis actually has a thriving and growing downtown residential population. Cybill Shepherd is probably the most famous resident of downtown Memphis.

Well Dr. Martin Luther King was assasinated in Memphis if I don't recall. Memphis was involved in the great civil rights movement and Tennesse was a confederate state. It definitely fixed the description of a southern state. People forget that the south is a very large region that incompass many differen't climates and vegatations. People get the notion that Atlanta fits the description of a southern city because of pine trees but Dallas or Houston dosen't fit the mode because of different vegation. Absolutely the dumbest assumption I have ever heard. The south is the south and all southerners from Texas to the Carolinas up through Tennesse have a southern accent and provide great southern hospitality.

What about SA though? I'm sure SA nor Austin are legitimate southern cities.

Yeah, it is common knowledge. However to be fair, somebody who knows a little about history MIGHT get confused by it, since Tennessee is known as the Volunteer state because of all the Tennesseans who volunteered to fight with the Union Army in the Civil War against the Confederate (southern) Army. So the thought might be that since Tennessee fought with the North against the South, it isn't Southern. We know that it IS, but somebody who just knew that tidbit of history and wasn't familiar with the South might easily be understandably uncertain.

Actually, Tennessee's nickname came from the War of 1812:
"Tennessee first earned the nickname "Volunteer State" in 1812. When war broke out between the United States and Britain, 2,000 Tennesseans volunteered to fight under the command of Tennessee Militia General Andrew Jackson. Those soldiers made up the main part of Jackson's army that destroyed the British at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815."

Very true. Most of Nashville's urbanites live around downtown in places like Midtown, Germantown or East Nashville. Downtown is just now starting to be attractive to residents again. Whereas, Memphis has had a ton of downtown residents for years.
