I agree London is light years ahead of both of these cities. I think in terms of architecture and urban setting both SF and Boston are two of the best in the country and about dead even in those regards, in completely different ways. Of course, its all subjective but I suspect they would both be near the top in a poll of US urban environments.
Anyways, I just thought this statement--
"There is more beautiful architecture and streetscapes in the Square Mile than there is in the entire Bay Area. And it's not even close. London, Paris and Rome have the best architecture on the planet in my opinion, with NYC not too far behind."--
did not give SF architecture and streetscapes its due. SF has a great mix of historical, Victorian, and modern architecture. It also has some of the most interesting, vibrant and beautiful streetscapes in the country. In the US, it is arguably top 2 or 3 in terms of streetscape, especially. So I wouldnt say Square Mile has more beautiful architecture and streetscapes than the entire bay area, or even just SF for that matter. And I wouldnt say that about Boston either (Keep in mind, too, that there is a reason European tourists absolutely love San Francisco and Boston)
I know you were trying to counter that wacko, but that kind of extreme statement doesnt strengthen your case!
I actually said that in honesty...I think the Square Mile has more beautiful architecture and streetscapes than the entire Boston area too. I don't think down on those cities. I simply think that much of the Square Mile. You may not agree, but let me send you a link (I will PM it to you), and let me know what you think afterwards.
You do realize that Harvard and MIT aren't the only colleges in Boston...right?
Just to add to tmac's comment, I think a lot of people have no idea that while Harvard undergraduate campus and the most famous parts of Harvard are in Cambridge (which still serves as the "HQ" if you will), it actually has more campus (if you're just measuring the land) in Boston at this point via its large Allston expansion.
But back to the conversation...
I've lived in Cambridge and currently reside in San Francisco. I love both places. You really can't go wrong with either. They are both among the top 5 in the country in terms of urbanity.
What I love about the urban fabric in Boston: The T (some hate it, I loved it), the Backbay (walking along Newbury and Boylston), the winding streets downtown, walking down Mass Ave through Central Square, and the tulips in the springtime
What I love about the urban fabric in SF: The historic street cars rumbling down Market, the back alleys of Chinatown, the buzz of Union Square, the vivid colors on many of the Victorians and Edwardians...

I could go on and on.
Yep, two great cities here. I just wish Boston was a bit father south...
No it's "not that serious" (and) I wasn't being absurd (I) made several good points (1.) LONDON is 2,000 years old..so it would have more BELL and Whistles than SAN FRANCISCO (Architecture) 2. A person traveling over the entire CITY of LONDON would see HIGH DENSITY and LOW DENSITY DaDaDa San Francisco higher Density Rating....The same holds true for Chicago and L.A...... They certainly are more dense in pockets of those cities...... 3.I like the GOLDEN GATE better than the Eiffel Towers PARIS and The Statue Of Liberty NEW YORK CITY..Colosseum ROME.. That My Prerogative "having a opinion" on a subject not important to "ME" Poster THROW-UP Stupid CITY Vs. CITY THREADS on city-data all the time and some people take them much too serious NOT ME. I like NATURAL BEAUTY West Coast People DO East Coast People DON'T that their's Prerogative CHILLAX I Said San Francisco HAD MORE URBAN BEAUTY Because of the Combination of Architecture and NATURAL BEAUTY..Peace Out And CHILLAX ....Please....RIDING THE YELLOW BUS WOULD BE FUN..... BUT PLEASE DON"T THROW ME UNDER THE >>BUS<<<<
WTF lol? Dude are you just on here to try and fulfill the stereotype of SF being drugged out? You're not making a whole lot of sense here man, and your arguments are too ridiculous to even bother trying to touch. I mean it sounds like your heart's in the right place, but your perceptions are pretty out there. No offense intended, I'm just finding your posts hard to take seriously. They are pretty funny tho.
IMO I believe Boston is more urban in nature, meaning the atmosphere and the people their have more of an urban attitude. People there have a strong urban demeanor.
Meanwhile San Francisco is more urban physically because it's a bigger dense city.
In conclusion, the people of Boston make its city feel more urban than the people of San Francisco does for its city. I think it's the east coast grit vs. the west coast fun in the sun atmosphere.

Although I still dont necessarily agree that Square Mile has more urban beauty than the entirety of SF (or Boston), after seeing the link I definitely see where you're coming from. European cities are just on a completely different level...

What is a strong urban demeanor? SF is more fast-paced than people think. Laid back but fast-paced, if that makes sense.

Add on the Victorian Era architecture of Kensington and Chelsea and you've got one hell of a collection.

London on the whole is remarkable. I feel like you could spend a lifetime exploring its urbanity...
An underrated European city with amazing urban beauty is Lisbon, Portugal.
