You remind me of me when I was 17 years old. I saw Florida as THE place and wanted to relocate there and thought it was everything I imagined. Until I started to go more, I realized it wasn't what I imagined. Also with my parents moving there (not by choice). My dad realized that too. It's much different living somewhere vs. vacationing there.
Florida's key industries are Tourism, Agriculture, Life Sciences, Information Technology, Aerospace/Aviation and Financial and Professional Services. Florida has a lot going for itself, I mean it has 18 million people so it must be doing something right. Maybe I am having this point of view because I am 17 but at the same time I am not a big city person either and Florida really appeals to me.

Default Tourism IS the top industry

Florida is way more than just beaches and New York is more than way more than just Wall Street.

Both NY and FL are nearly identical in size (population & area).

Florida's GDP ranks 4th and New York's GDP ranks 3rd so they are pretty close.
in Florida and to a lesser degree, agriculture. That is the major problem. No diverisity of industry.

Well people forget about NASA in Florida and, it's helping the aerospace industry downthere. I think launching rockets to the moon was an important thing, maybe it wasn't THAT big a deal to some people on hear. People also forget about lockhead martin having a lab in Orlando, and Orlando is a HOTBED for weapons testing, and simulation. And Florida is growing in the Biomedical field with Scripps building a lab down in Palm Beach County and then you got all the Naval Bases down there, I think that's important, then you got all the ports, one of them being the Port Of Jacksonville where Toyota car parts are shipped in, so if you drive a Toyota.... And also Florida has the 4th highest number of High-tech companies, the IBM PC was developed at the IBM in Boca Raton. And also Orlando was a hotspot for filming, Nickelodeon studios in the 90's had plenty of shows filmed there at Universal Studios, and many other movies filmed there also. And Florida's GDP is right behind New Yorks. So Floridas not TOO obselete. But #3 is definately New York, and #4 is definately Florida.

I agree I thought NASA was important.

Like you said, Living and visiting are two different things. That's probably why your mom hates it more lol

I wrote down the top ten strictly by GDP and population on another thread, so here I am just rewriting the top seven. Keep in mind that a larger economic and population size does not necessarily mean a state is more important than another but it sure does not hurt when making the case!

1. California $1.846 TRILLION GDP with 36.8 million people.

2. Texas --------$ 1.223 trillion with 24.3 million people
3. New York -----$ 1.144 trillion with 19.5 million people
4. Florida --------$ .744 trillion with 18.3 million people
5. Illinois --------$ .633 trillion with 12.9 million people
6. Pennsylvania --$ .553 trillion with 12.5 million people
7. New Jersey ---$ .474 trillion with 8.6 million

I went down to New Jersey to show how well the little Garden State stacks up compared to some of the others. I expect a similar situation for Massachusetts and Maryland although I did not look them up.

In addition, I had no idea that Illinois had so many people, just shy of 13 million. Also her economy is very close to the next biggest, Florida, despite having alot less people.

Finally I hate to admit but it looks like Texas passes New York on this one, although once again the lesser state (NY) does economically well despite having a smaller population and size.

Idk but I would put New York ahead of Texas by a slight margin.
