Not a perfect proxy for overall crime, but here are the murder rates for 2008 for the following cities (expressed as murders per 100k of population.)

Baltimore, MD 37.1
Newark, NJ 23.9
Atlanta, GA 20.2
Chicago, IL 18
Richmond, VA 16.4
Bronx, NY 8.8

im surprized the bx has such a low crime rate. i dont think its fair to use the whole city of chicago to compare to these places but if u were to use the west side then (going by crime rate) it would be something like this

west side
bmore
newark
atl
richmond
boogie down

The crime rate doesn't tell the whole story, like the City-Data Crime Index. For arguments sake, compare Boca Raton, FL to New York City and check the statistics:

City-Data Crime Index:
Boca: 274.9
NYC: 253.3

Murders:
Boca: 5
NYC: 496

Rapes:
Boca: 16
NYC: 875

Robberies:
Boca: 83
NYC: 21,787

Assaults:
Boca: 132
NYC: 27,295

Now, you tell me which area is safer. More spread out, lower populated areas can have a higher crime rate, yet be much, much safer overall. NYC's density completely skews the numbers...the criminals simply can't keep up! The C-D Crime Index just doesn't paint a proper picture of an area's safety at all.

We already have several "what cities are more dangerous" or crime-type threads floating around in here if you do a search. Even narrowing it down via a list makes it too similar. Please add to one of the existing crime discussions rather than starting up a new one. Thank you.
