SoCal has a diverse range geography and topography. You can go to the beach and go surfing, then go to the desert, then and go snow-skiing in the mountains, ALL in SoCal. What other place in the US can you do ALL of that?
In NNJ you can to NYC, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Boston, Connecticut and upstate NY...all as accesible as those things are in SoCal for the Locals.

San Diego is SoCal, and Vegas is anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on traffic. It took me 8 hours one year (Christmas) to drive back from Vegas....It's an odd feeling stopped in Traffic in the middle of no where.

How is Flying anywhere part of living in a certtain city?? And that flight to Hawaii isn't that short. I could say that NNJ is a closer flight to Europe than LA, but how does that effect living there?
