NYC is overrated. Post guiliani New York is like an urban adult theme park for suburban tourists. It used to be affordable.
NYC is where I like to party, but I wouldn't live there unless I started making 200K a year.
Was New York ever really affordable? Nice areas were always more expensive and nowadays there are simply much less bad areas.
I would rather have clean post Guliani New York than a stinking unsafe rathole it used be before Gulianini/Bloomberg.
Living in the center of the known universe got cost you. If you don't believe check apartment rates in other great world cities like London, Paris or Tokyo...

I know my city, i lived here all my life. I dont know who the heck is carrie bradshaw but if anybody thought they cold live the high life while working at starbucks, is an idiot. Teenagers work at starbucks. That goes for any where, y someone would believe they could make it off a high school job living the high life?
A sense of community, less hustle and bustle, Qol etc(all your negatives) can be discounted and can be found all over the city. Anyone that knows new york knows that a sense of community can be extremely strong in alot of areas. EXTREMELY. I know this firsthand
Nycs middleclass lives in nyc. Why are you mentioning other states. New york is a city of 8.3 million people alone, theres no need to mention states that have nothing to do with it. Im middle class and so are the ppl i know. To say there are only the rich and the poor sounds extremely naive

If NYC was in another country, its star would be alot brighter. Theres more competition in the US. New york has to share with los angelos,chicago,boston,dc,philly,san fransico and all the other cities. London,paris dont have too
And how does nyc get overshadowed anyway. Despite it having immense competition both nationally and internationally, its often still considered number 1 in the world by experts?
I have not read a true concrete reason how nyc is overrated. NYC never said it was squeaky clean or didnt have rude people.lol
That's a good point about the competition. Maybe what I was getting at is that it's easy to consider NYC the world king all the time, but there are cities like Amsterdamn, Paris, London, Tokyo, Moscow, Hong Kong, Berlin, Madrid, and others that give NYC a run for its money. Not until recently visiting, and researching some of those cities did I consider them anything other than NYC pee ons
And my opinion, I think NYC is the greatest city in the world. Hands down. There is no other city like it.

I kind of agree with your list,but......you have to take NYC out of the overated list . It's rated just right! Indianpolis overated? Not really,but the whole state of indiana is ghetto and dirty,kind of like Jersey,in the ghetto and dirty part.Detriot is much worse then Indianapolis.
Chicago (Greatest city on Earth IMO) < I 2nd that!
As for Detroit being underrated, I'll explain...

Also, in suburbs like the GPs, Birmingham, Bloomfield, Utica, Ann Arbor (not a suburb but close to the D and a great city nonetheless), Royal Oak, Berkley, and other Oakland/Washtenaw county areas, you can be a part of the Detroit metro and pay Detroit prices (50-100k for a large home in a nice neighborhood) and still have the safety, nightlife, etc. of a much larger city, as many of Detroit's famous cultural and entertainment entities have either branched into the burbs or relocated there entirely.
...but it's making progress, especially with David Bing in office. The man is going to help save the city. Finally a transition from Kwame to what I'd consider to be one of the least corrupt public officials in a large city's office.
Now we just gotta kick out ol' Jen.
It'll come back. It may be 5, 10, even 15+ years, but it'll achieve a respectable status again someday. 'Till then I love it. It won't rise to its original greatness but that's because an elem. school dropout can't make 30+$/hr (adjusted) these days.
My explanation for NYC being overrated? [Before my Kentucky days] I grew up riding the Metra, eating real pizza and hot dogs, watching the Cubbies and interacting with people who aren't living the Friends dream :P

Either way, it doesn't matter if either of you are REAL New Yorkers. You both call it home now. What it means to be a REAL resident of the city is empty, meaningless, and would point out a lack of individuality if anything.
