I think Houston would probably do better if they had an NHL team imo.

Yeah, the NHL would be cool in Houston. Tried to get the Penguins when they were considering a move a few years ago. Dallas is the only city with teams in the five major sports leagues.

Yeah, and add MLS too, I know most people think its irrelevant, and all, but since Houston supports it well, it deserves a mention, and is more supported than Dallas' NHL, and MLS, and is more supported than Atlantas' NHL.

Most recent attendance figures, sorry if this has been discussed before.
All home game averages

NFL
Dallas Cowboys-89,756 (obviously we know why)
Houston Texans-70,608
Atlanta Falcons- 68,173

MLB, all pretty dismal
Atlanta Braves-28,999
Texas Rangers-26,204
Houston Astros-25,603
*though Houston has the highest percentage at ~63%

NBA
Dallas Mavericks-19,994
Atlanta Thrashers-16,545
Houston Rockets- 16,528
*Houston Rockets had a higher percentage than ATL, ~92% vs ~88%

NHL
Texas Stars-17,215
Atlanta Thrashers-13,607
No Houston Franchise

MLS
Houston Dynamo-17,624
FC Dallas-9,883
No ATL Franchise
*FC Dallas worst in league

Just based on this, I would say Dallas is the better sports town, followed by Houston, then Atlanta. Though my choice, based on all other factors would be the same.

IMO, I can do without an MLS team, I really only care about Baseball, Football, Hockey, and Basketball. Although I do enjoy the World Cup.

Hockey and Soccer is the league will be a tie sooner rather than later, I think. The MLS is getting more and more popular, while the NHL is declining, except for in a few areas (like the New Years game). You're seeing all sorts of new MLS Stadiums nowadays. A concept for the new Dynamo Stadium looks pretty nice.

What I've noticed with the Texans is that after each season that goes by it edges out more and more of Dallas's fan base in other parts of Texas. The Texans are playing better, they are getting more fans, and they are getting to that level now.

I'm a HUGE hockey and baseball fan, it's a shame Houston doesn't have a NHL team, hmm I want to see what happens to the Coyote's since they're in bankruptcy, maybe we can get it going on. The demand for NHL in Houston is increasing.

I personally prefer the Astros way more than the Rangers. I think most people in Texas probably do like Astros more. They are THE better team. Although this season has been trashy for them but still.
Astros > Braves > Rangers

As far as baskeball goes, I will say this, Houston has potential. But I really hate the Rockets now, up till my 12th grade year in high school, I was a huge fan, but they're crossing the line now. Injuries for the whole season and then he goes to play for China in the Olympics? Riiiightttt. I'm now a new converted Spurs fan.
The Hawks aren't that good anymore, and their fan support is terrible. The Mavericks, are probably the best out of the three.
Mavericks > Hawks > Rockets
I really think Rockets need a new rooster, a new management (coaches, trainers etc) and some more game plays experience if they ever want to get better... We need to start cleaning up on some of the trashy players we have, Ariza was a terrible trade...

The Falcons have been in a downer situation since I believe 2005, right? But I think they're a pretty good team. They've certainly made a name for themselves.

But yeah, I should add the Texans to Houston's list from my earlier post.

The Rangers, and the Stars do NOT deserve to be on the list. I like AHL Aeros more than the Stars... (Not trying to attack Dallas there, but it's true)
Dallas's gems in the sports world are the Mavs and the Cowboys, and they're both GREAT teams.

Another thing, I know this doesn't matter much, but Houston has new sports venues for ALL of it's professional sports teams, the parks/arenas/stadiums are at a max 10 years old.

Minute Maid Stadium: Completed in 2000
Toyota Center: Completed in 2004
Reliant Stadium: Completed in 2002
Dynamo Stadium: Being constructed now

All of Houston's venues are very new compared to other cities. I know Dallas just got a new stadium, but not all of their sports have new venues like Houston does.
Mad props though, the Cowboys Stadium is MASSIVE!

Disagree here. The Rockets easily have the best future out of the three teams. They were above .500 without their top three scorers from last season. They can make a trade for Chris Bosh with all of the assets they got in the McGrady trade. Plus, a lottery pick. Basically, the Rockets have a chance to get a player like John Wall AND trade for Chris Bosh. Sick team right?

And the Ariza signing is looking like a good one. When Ariza was put back into his natural SF position when Kevin Martin arrived, we saw what he could do. He got points, assists, rebounds, etc. Can't wait to see what he does when Yao gets back...

Oh, and the Rockets probably have the best GM in the league in Daryl Morey. Dude is a genius.

But, agreed with the rest of your post.

What do you think is worse, Los Angeles being the 2nd largest city with no NFL team? Or Houston being the 4th largest city with no NHL team?

LA's situation is far worse than Houston's.

But in my opinion, they're both pretty bad, but I have a bias, because I'm a HUGE hockey fan! It's one of my Chicago like characteristics that I never was able to shake off.
