They all feel like 1 million metro areas too me, just in different ways. OKC is very spread out for example and even the urban core of OKC is quite low density, but the footprint of the metro is massive.
The others on the list have pretty dense urban cores at least.
Salt Lake City impresses me the most as offering more "big city" attributes. To me, Salt Lake City is a smaller, more conservative version of Denver, mountains nearby and all.
Hartford is sort of in the shadow of much bigger cities like NYC and Boston (like Providence).
Places like Salt Lake City and OKC are more regional cities so they tend to have more attractions, sports teams etc.
Birmingham is a nice city, but seems like an overgrown college town to me than a big city.
Same with Louisville, and really OKC to a degree. Those people are into college sports like crazy, similar to Kansas, Nebraska, Alabama etc.
I'll go with Salt Lake City, for reasons others have mentioned...the combined Wasatch Front area sprawls forever, and is well over 2 million total. Plus, the bad air in the SLC valley makes it feel like a bigger area.
I think Richmond, VA (MSA: 1.2 million) is a contender here also:
