I think some people could argue texas is still too dependent on oil (or at least some cities are)

Well this is pretty stupid, if someone wants to argue i'll bring the facts and prove Texas is not dependent on oil.

Oil prices are low and you don't see oil companies laying off thouand's of people. Our economy is better than most other states; better than Florida's economy.

Not really. It does sometimes seem that way, but it's not true. Texas has the second highest employment of high-tech jobs in the country. And plus ALOT of BIG high-tech companies such as Dell, and Texas Intruments just to name a few are headquartered there. There is also AT&T. Then there is the biomedical field which is GROWING. Bio-tech is sprouting. Texas is a leading state in IT, I belive it's only second behind Cali. And plus there's aeronautics and defense technologies which is also huge in Tx. Then theres tourism and agriculture and timber. Texas is also a transportation hub. And Houston has one of the highest job growth. So I think texas is more then just oil, although there may still be some small towns that are dependent upon it.

I'm sure everyone knows that Florida's economy is in the toilet... don't bash Florida.. I think they were just stating a fact.

This is the most recent data I could find on Industrial diversity by state. Before you comment on some of these numbers, remember A.) several years old and B.) this is a macro picture compared to capita, which most people have trouble visualizing through this index which is somewhat complex.

Herfindahl Index by State:

Development Report Card For The States (http://www.cfed.org/focus.m?parentid=34&siteid=1581&id=1601&year=2006& measureid=2803 - broken link)

Summary: NC was slightly more diverse then TX. Both were in the top 10. Growth rates both states have been similar since the data was published (up to about mid 2008 due to oil at $140 divergence). Basically, you can sum up both states having equal industrial diversity (like it or not...).
