The 75 cities included in the book were selected by a panel of Time Out experts according to six criteria: Architecture, Arts & Culture, Buzz, Food & Drink, Quality of Life and World Status.
In conjunction with our local correspondents, the panel then awarded the cities scores in each category and totalled them up for an overall ranking. The results are both fascinating and often surprising.
1. New York
2. London
3. Paris
4. Berlin
5. Barcelona (tie)
6. Chicago (tie)
7. Tokyo (tie)
8. Istanbul
9. Rome (tie)
10. Sydney
That's a very good list of world class cities. I agree with everything on that list but I'd put Barcelona above Berlin just based on how beautiful of a city it is. Time Out is great BTW. Everyone I know in those major cities always reads their weekly Time Out magazine to find out what's going on in the city. Time Out was essential when I was living in New York and London.
Hell yeah NYC! You are the best city in the world!
I agree with most of the list although I have some questions/contentions ...
Perhaps I am just woefully ignorant -- Istanbul is a great city but is it really top 10 material? Did I miss something??
Sydney is known to be a beautiful city with a great quality of life but is it more deserving of the top 10 than, say, Hong Kong, Moscow or LA?
Location: The land of sugar... previously Houston and Austin
