Rapid City has great scenery and descent weather.

Rochester is constantly ranked among the best cities to live. Rochester is also almost twice the size of Rapid City and is located near a major metropolitan area.

Being that they are both fairly cold in the winter, I don't find either one too appealing. At least Rapid City has the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore as well as the Badlands less than an hour away. Never been to Rochester though.

I came close to living in Rochester when I interviewed for a position with Mayo Clinic. The medical facilities alone would make it a great choice, along with the proximity to the Twin Cities. Rapid City is an interesting place, but it's kinda out there in the middle of nowhere.

Rochester, MN. It has the Mayo Clinic, and even though it's a small town, it is close to Minneapolis. South Dakota is just too far away from civilization. But I agree with some of the other posters who said Rapid City has better scenery.
