I'm a soon to be college grad in the CS field. I'm itching to get out of the hometown and ideally want to live somewhere with a music scene. The more music, the better
I've been debating between Nashville and Boston. Nashville would be less expensive and I could take my car with me. Boston....Ramen noodles in the candlelight. Boston is my dream city though
Which of these cities do you think has the better music scene? Is Nashville gaining more recognition for other music other than country?
I'm not sure which city would be more difficult to find a job in the tech field in. The kids in Boston probably have me beat out every which way because of the education over there.
I like country music, well I like all kinds of music but I would pick Nashville, but if Boston is your dream city then you should go to Boston and make it happen, I dont know what kind of music scene Boston has though.
Boston has a great music scene. It is one of the few major cities where it seems live music dominates the nightlife scene (rather than dance clubs). The music/bands are pretty varied. In fact it seems to be the "thing" to have at least 6 adjectives to describe your band's style ("funky, psychedelic, British, African, blues rock from outer space").
Nashville is certainly a city where country music dominates. The bars downtown all have live country acts nightly. I'm not sure what the market is there for musicians in other genres though. Certainly flipping through radio stations there it's country or Jesus. I imagine there's lots of creative synergy there though.
Nashville has ALWAYS had a big music scene other than country--that's the genre that has headquartered here. Shoot, most any successful rock musician has at one time or another also recorded in Nashville.
Sure, the downtown bar scene is mostly country--due ot a couple of factors--it's proximity to where the most successful country venue is (the Ryman, where the "Grand Ol' Opry was performed for decades) and the downtown country scene continues as it is now the country TOURIST mecca--that's what the folks come to see and expect.
However, all over the city are other music venues for all kinds of music.
If you like live music and a variety, it's tough to beat Nashville.
I only like the African American music in the south, which would get me to choose Nashville, or that general area really. But to honest, I can't think of any music that comes from Boston besides some rock which I'm not a fan of.
I'd choose Boston over Nashville if it was my choice because the general scene there tops Nashville. (excluding the music scene which should be diverse in Boston anyhow)
both are pretty one-dimensional in music - its a toss up
