Aspen is a lot nicer and more upscale. I believe it's the most expensive city/town in the US so it's unattainable for the grand majority of us. I stopped for a bit while visiting the Maroon Bells and it very much gives you a Beverly Hills "I don't know if I should even be here" type of vibe. I get why many would pick South Lake Tahoe for that reason alone. It's a lot less pricey and feels more inclusive. I'd peronally pick Aspen though because it's Aspen.

Tahoe doesn't really have big peaks around. I mean, yeah, the mountains are large and do barely scrape above the treeline, but Aspen has Colorado's most iconic (arguably) pair of mountains right there, sitting in the middle of the rugged Elk Mountains which is Aspen's backyard. Not to mention the fall scenery around Aspen is outstanding. To get to the high Sierra from Tahoe, it's a bit of a drive.

Don't get me wrong, Tahoe is amazing. But...this is Aspen we're talking about.
To add, the towns surrounding Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada are more arid than Aspen, so in the Lake Tahoe region, it is more apparent that you are in the desert. IMO, the aridity of the Lake Tahoe region slightly detracts from its natural beauty.

I think Tahoe is more fun, offers more variety of terrain, has casinos and better nightlife, and is just a cooler place. But I’ll take Whistler over all of them. That’s the complete package.

Nah. The view skiing Heavenly with the lake in front of you is one of the best in North America. The terrain is nothing special and the skiing surface isn’t ever going to compare to Colorado but it’s a phenomenal view. The rich people are across the lake in Incline Village. You move and then sell your stock in your tech company without California state income taxes. The tax savings more than pays for the trophy home.

For me, the only place I’ve ever experienced better views while skiing is the South Island of New Zealand.

My sister once had a 3 bedroom condo in Aspen. She sold it for enough to pay for a beautiful $1.5 million mountain home "back east" and enough to purchase 50% of a Learjet to fly back and forth to the condo.

Nuff said.

Tahoe has more ski mountains in the region than Aspen, and they get more snow. It's often warmer and more comfortable to ski there than in Colorado. And the atmosphere in Aspen is really more "elitists" than middle class Tahoe skiers.

Why would she fly back and forth to the condo she had already sold?

But, agree about the "elitists" vibe in Aspen. I remember reading that the biggest "complaint" from visitors was the fact that the Aspen airport was too small, and people had to wait and circle around Aspen before they were allowed to land their private jets. And, yeah, when you drive into Aspen and pass that freaking airport, you realize how absolutely out of place you are in your Subaru, lmao.

Maroon Bells are gorgeous though. In every season they are majestic and worth going through Aspen to get there.
