My husband and I just got married and have been living in Aspen, CO for eight years. We love Aspen, but it is far from family and too expensive to settle down in. He is an architect and I am an entrepreneur. We love a creative environment, eco-conscious towns, culture, nature, public transportation, walkable towns, etc. We will move anywhere to the east coast or the midwest. Town size does not matter. If anyone can give us a little input we would greatly appreciate it!

It's a shame you want east or midwest, because Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco are what you're looking for (minus the expensive part). People on this forum will be able to help you with bigger cities but if you're looking for advice on towns that are sized similarly to Aspen then I would suggest coming up with a list of potential candidate cities and then bringing that list to the individual state forums and getting more specific feedback.

Are you looking at major cities or at towns?

I'd recommend Yardly, PA.
The location is a progressive location (Across the river from NJ's capital and about 35 miles north of Philly).. It's pretty up-scaled, but affordable. (compared to Aspen) And it's school's are very good if thats an issue as well.
It's proximity to Trenton has no effect on it's overall crime.

Ithaca, NY could work. Maybe Burlington VT. You might like parts of Syracuse(East Side) or DeWitt(an adjacent Eastern suburb) by the Universities. We have an state college of environmental science and forestry school too: SUNY-ESF, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry It's right next to Syracuse University(which has a great Architecture school) and the Upstate Medical Center(aka University Hospital). Oneonta, NY, which is in the Foothills of the Catskills and has 2 colleges could be a place to consider.

Thanks for the input. We wish we could move west, but it's time to move closer to family. We are not looking for a town the size of Aspen because, in most cases, that would be too small for us. In November we are taking long road-trip to the east coast and midwest....hope to see some of the towns recommended. Thanks so much!

I agree about Ithaca, NY. Seems to be your type of city. I spent some time there and it's really nice.

How's Ithaca's public transportation system? Also, does the city wind down a lot come winter?

Chapel Hill, Carrboro, or Asheville N.C. are all known for progressive atmospheres and offer all of the things on your list. The internet provides quality information on each.
