I'm not loaded so I'd like to live somewhere where the rent is affordable for a one bedroom apt or a studio (less than $1000 if possible, in a neighbourhood thats not really scummy, and central enough). Also need to find somewhere where a lease of seven or eight months is not unheard of.

City needs to be young and with exciting nightlife (live music as well as good nightclubs). I'd ideally be able to do some outdoor stuff too, like horse riding etc.

Any tips would be hugely appreciated!
How did Pittsburgh end up on this list?

I don't know how Toronto rates (plus it does present some visa issues since it's not in the U.S.), but none of the other three have all of what you're looking for. SF is almost certainly out of your budget, Pittsburgh doesn't really have the "young exciting nightlife" feel, and Chicago is not well-situated for outdoor recreation options. I'd say the one that comes closest to meeting your stated criteria is Pittsburgh. It's nightlife is the weakest of the lot, but I suspect there's still enough to do to keep a 20-year-old occupied for 9 months. Outdoor recreational activities are a very short drive away. Which reminds me, how do you plan to get to these outdoor recreational opportunities? Perhaps renting a car as needed?

Something worth keeping in mind is that the drinking age in the U.S. is 21, which could limit your nightlife options until your 21st birthday.

8-month leases are unheard of probably everywhere. Your best bet there is to look for a sublease or maybe a month-to-month rental arrangement.

Trust me, you'll love Toronto to bits, and the drinking age is only 19.

You should replace Pittsburgh with Montreal or Boston.

In order with the current cities:
1) Chicago
2) Toronto
3) San Fran
4) Pittsburgh

A good option would be Milwaukee. It is close to Chicago. It has a ton of bars. It is cheap. There is a lot of rural/natural lands very close to Milwaukee.

Since you list party as your main interest, the best chance a young female has to come home in one piece is easily Toronto.

Just out of curiousity how did you choose these cities? Well for your budget I would eliminate SF although its an amazing city. Any of the the other 3 would be good choices.

In order of best to worst for your situation:

1. Toronto
2. San Francisco
3. Pittsburgh
4. Chicago

Don't go to Chicago. Terrible economy, and no jobs right now.

She didn't say anything about needing a job. What is with your obsession with turning every thread you touch into a discussion of how much you dislike Chicago? It's tiresome, as are you.
