"Had to move to the Appalachians?" I should think it would be, "If you were priviledged to move to the Appalachians."
I would move to the Eastern side of the Appalachians because the weather is so much better in that area. The mountains knock off the bad weather that usually comes from the West and the Eastern side is much more protected from bad weather. I grew up about five miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and it was a wonderful life.
I would go to either "Far Northwester South Carolina", so I could travel down to Clemson and see the Tigers play in the fall. Probably Lake Keowee area, which is beautiful . If not that, I'd go North of Atlanta. My college roommate was from Rabun County and that whole area is gorgeous too.
I'll try and ignore the base insult toward Atlanta and agree that if you want more of a rural experience in your mountain living, north GA is probably the worst choice you could make. Rural life there is quickly vanishing, and I've been up there when looky-lous from the city have the mountain roads clogged up bumper-to-bumper.
Yeah, who would have thought a thread about the Appalachians would give someone the opportunity to bash Atlanta.
Anyhow, my votes went to North Georgia (since I'm already familiar with the area), Eastern Tenn., and Western N.C. In North GA, I especially like the areas between Dahlonega, Helen, and Blairsville, and have seriously considered purchasing a home there.
West Virginia, eastern panhandle, town such as Shepherdstown, WV. Rural, yet has a thriving arts community and shops in the downtown area, near State parks, and is about 1.5 hours from DC or Baltimore should you require larger city things at times.

I was just in Shepherdstown over Thanksgiving! Charming little college town...We ate at that restaurant on the corner that used to be a bank.
I also like nearby Berkeley Springs.
