This one is going to have a short description for I have never lived in a mountainous city but have visited a few and I LOOVVEE them! Epically in the fall and winter! Mt. Airy is a small city but is VERY beautiful indeed and Asheville is a little under 100,000 but I love the skylines and then the natural skyline of the mountains and sunsets can be so scenic and awesome!

So out of all the cities that qualify (*100,000 or more) which do you think is the best?

*(you can have cities a little less than 100,00)

Asheville NC

Also another mentionable city I have been to that has the best and my favorite out of all even though it does not qualify, has to be Cherokee NC the largest population of Indians on the east coast and east of the Mississippi! Know for its casinos, views, Cherokee tribes, awesome heritage, entertainment for both young and adults, and so much I would honestly prefer Cherokee over Charlotte IMPO though.

Cherokee NC

Asheville all the way!

As for Mt. Airy, it certainly is a small and charming town, but are you implying it is a "mountainous city"? I thought we'd covered this in a previous thread...Mt. Airy is a small town in the northwest piedmont region of North Carolina, a region of rolling hills. There happens to be a single "mountain", or monadnock called Pilot Mountain about 15 miles south of Mt. Airy. You can also head about 15 miles north into Virginia and find mountains there. But, Mt. Airy is by no means a mountainous city.

All great mountain towns, but OP seemed interested in mountainous cities of 100,000 or more. Of course, OP also threw in a non-mountainous town of 8,000 so who knows!

One that comes sort of close with a population in the 60-70k range is Flagstaff, AZ.

Actually in the mountains, there are very few cities that have a population that large.

The largest cities would probably be Asheville, NC, the Tri-Cities of Tennessee and Virginia, Roanoke, VA, Charleston, WV, Elmira, NY, and Morgantown, WV.

Flagstaff doesn't really feel as though it is in the mountains. It has some large mountains nearby, but it definitely looks and seems as though it is on a plateau which, given the higher elevation, allow for pine trees in the area.

In the U.S., My vote is Seattle. I'd give San Francisco a close second. If you consider all of [i]North America[i], then Vancouver would take first.

You're right, there are few "mountainous cities" in the US.

Having lived in Flagstaff, I think it has a classic mountain town vibe. The lower slopes of the San Francisco Peaks (highest mountains in AZ at 12,000'+) drop right into town at Buffalo Park & Mt. Elden. They are essentially an extension of the town. That combined with cold nights, lots of pines & aspen & over 100" of snow per year qualifies it in my book.

Beat me to it, Morgantown's population is somewhere north of 70K when school is in session, it would get my vote for #2 right after Asheville.

My favorite in this category is the Reno-Lake Tahoe Area.

My parent have a home up there and its really beautiful. I like that there is so much to see and do(lots of headliners get up there to the Casinos) and its genuinely a great place to live.
