There are toll booths in Houston, in something called The Sam Houston Tollway. It currently is $1.75 in fee, but depending on how long or far you are going you may come across another stop point. Houston is a remarkable city and offers many amenities. From cuisines, hospitality, lodging, sportable events, to multi-acre homes and shopping districts. The Greater Houston area will most likely be to your liking and if you do not decide to do so, go with Dallas.
Dallas is both hotter and colder than Houston. Houston's location near the Gulf of Mexico, moderates temperatures. Houston has a tropical climate, there are palm trees, Dallas has a climate more similar to the prarie states.
Dallas is hotter Houston's more like LA. It's a huge city with beach coastline About 2.5 million people with 30,000 moving here each year. You would love it.

Houston isn’t like LA. They both have extreme sprawl and are diverse. That’s where the similarities end.
Both are good, so this is a real tough one for me. The Houston area has a coastline (I love the beach). Dallas has more of a 4-season climate (I love getting at least some snow). But the DFW area has Six Flags (I'm a major theme park buff). Most everything else is relatively even. I'll go with Dallas.
I know you didn’t list it, but I’d look at Fort Worth. It was my favorite Texas city to live in by a long shot.
Between Dallas and Houston, they’re about the same but I like Houston’s culture a bit better. On the other hand, and others will probably disagree, but I feel like Dallas is trending up and Houston is trending down, or staying out at best. If I had to bet on a city for the next 20 years I’d bet on Dallas and it wouldn’t even be close.
Both good cities, lived in both. Houston isn't hotter than Dallas, but its more humid and can feel hotter a good chunk of the time. Yes there are less toll roads in Houston than the Dallas area but if you're located in the inner part of either city, they shouldn't affect you much if at all.
Culturally I like Houston better, economically, I think Dallas offers a bit more for the typical worker. Go for whichever one has the right job for you and go from there would be my advice.
I like Dallas a lot more, personally. Houston has a lot of areas with little or no zoning that makes it feel like a giant jumbled mess (where Dallas seem more coherently planned). It's also much more Southern, culturally. Being from the Midwest, I've never felt that out of place in Dallas. Dallas itself feels slightly Midwestern.
Houston is really diverse though, and has a great food scene as a result.

This claim that Houston is more "southern" is so over used, and frankly annoying to me. Many people say Dallas is the more Texas city then in the same breath say Houston is both more southern and international. If Dallas is the more Texas city of the two, and Houston is more international, then by default Dallas is the more "southern" city.
If you felt out of place in Houston I'm sorry but this "giant jumbled mess" as you call it, would be the antithesis of a Southern City as well.
