What are the hippest metro areas in America? (Choose top-3 in the poll, please).

A hip city is indellibly characterized by a vibrant urban core/dowtown, a major arts and culture scene, a great restaurant/culinary scene, an artsy, young population, diversity of residents, etc. In other words--HIP, COOL, SOPHISTICATED, etc.

Notice that I'm asking about metro areas--not cities. If you look at the hippest cities in America, the hip-ness of the urban core expends outwards to fill the whole metro area with an artsy atmosphere.

Alas, my votes: San Francisco, Seattle, New York

New York and Atlanta are usually the most popular as far as "cool" goes, but a lot of people have said that Houston is the most fun they've ever had, so I voted for those three.

The classic Tower of Power song "What Is Hip?" comes to mind.
If cool and sophisticated means cutting edge innovation, I'd probably look to the coasts, New York and LA--but Chicago has a lot going for it.
I'm gonna go with those three.
Mpope, I too have heard really good things about Houston. Sometimes hip cities are just waiting to be discovered, as Austin was 10-15 years ago.

Portland/San Fransisco has the most hippies.
Chicago has the widest hips. (behind Wisconsin)
So Cal has the hottest hips. (with help)
A lot of mended hips in Miami (so wrong)
Up here in the PNW the raincoats are finally off
and the hips ain't bad... so I hear.

I think in the U.S. New York and LA by far set the tone and trend for hipness and cool in American culture at every level--fashion, performings arts, visual arts, cuisine, entertainment/clubs, music, architecture, celebrities and other high profile residents who others try to imitate etc.

The third spot is a toss up since all of the other major U.S. cities are uniquely hip and cool in their own way, but do not have the national or global trendsetting impact of NY and LA.

Austin, Chicago, and LA.

I grew up in NY and it is not just hip...it is downright awesome! But I wanted to vote for other cities this time (and avert hometown bias).

I must say I love living in KC. There are some really hip pockets of the city...Westport and Crosstown Arts District are definitely hip.
