These two are East and West coast versions of each other in some ways, though Brooklyn is larger and more populous while Oakland is still its own city rather than a borough.
Similarities:
- just across the water from the easily accessible two powerhouses (Manhattan and SF) which often overshadow them, but also gain from the spillover of people and services
- serve as residences for commuters into their more famous kin, but also have a lot of pride and history within their own communities and their own urban core
- kept more of their industrial and port services while their neighbors across the water had them withered away
- very diverse areas with people of all sorts and stripe, as well as serving as centers of urban African-American culture
- new hotbeds for food lovers
I'm much more familiar with Brooklyn, than I am with Oakland, but on the surface they seem to have a lot in common.
oakland is more like the bronx, as they are the armpit of their respective region.
Oakland is a wonderful city. I would compare Oakland to Queens out of NY city burroughs. Yo Oy, they are both awesome places lol, you should rephrase your poll question.
Most of San Francisco is more like Brooklyn than Manhattan.
