I think a convincing case can be made for all 8, but it's probably D.C.

D.C. is where all the decisions are made.

I see Philly and Houston also getting a ton of votes, but when you look at CSA output #s, they are at least a $100 Billion off.

As a matter of fact, DC edges Chicago in overall CSA output, and the Bay Area is likely to pass Chicago in the next few years as well. So there you go. There's no right or wrong answer, but only Chicago, DC, and the SF Bay are in the running for the #3 to #5 spots.
I agree, and lets be honest, the only thing that matters is the all mighty dollar

I should also add that this topic is a very subjective one indeed. It all depends on what is more important: economic output, being a "regional captial", global economic connectivity, political capital, or cultural capital? For people who are actually interested at looking at this objectively, check out this link:

This blog does a fairly good job of collecting all of the available data for the various city ranking studies over the last few years that resulted in this table (read the site for an explanation):

Awesome link. I wonder why I never stumbled upon it myself. Anyways, the results based from aggregated data from multiple sources is certainly the most comprehensive, and probably the closest to reality. So thanks for providing.

Ain't that the truth. We can go on all day about this and that, but when it comes down to it there are only two things that make a city important: money and power. Everything else is just window dressing.

Just look at Dubai. 30 years ago that place was literally just another dot on a map.

Yup, and it's probably going to become a dot on the map once again haha. That place is crashing and burning.

The above studies ranked cities along with their metro areas. For example, nearly all of the studies included San Jose and Silicon Valley with San Francisco.
The secret is out. Also, they apparently don't even know what the metro areas are.
