The southern U.S. would have around 110 million people, the northeast would be reduced to 40 million and the midwest would remain 67 million. Regional definitions and influences would very likely shift. The northeast + midwest together = 107 million strong and could balance out the south.

Also, Canada already factors in considerably in the broader region since most of that country's population (and 2 largest cities) is in Ontario and Quebec - another 21 million - and close to the northeastern U.S. border.

The true loser in all of this would be the western U.S. - only 35 million people would remain thinly spread out over a VAST area including the Pacific Northwest, the southwest, the mountain west and Alaska/Hawaii. Without California, the western U.S. is reduced to practically nothing.

I consider New York City the "nerve center" of all commerce, stock, trade that runs this country. I have to say that New York city would be way more detrimental.

All the money/stock/commerce was in Philadelphia, and relocated back to NYC. Soooo it'll just go back to Normal.

LOL, it's not that simple. Our currency and economy are less tangible than we'd like to believe and there is only value in it because we choose to believe so, but it will still be a ginormous challenge (yet extremely fruitful in the end) to build a more honest/transparent/less wasteful economy and financial system.

Without a doubt NYC.... currently, all the worst things America offers are centered in NYC..... Wall St, the fashion trash industry, the large state media networks, rap music, the Yankees. America would be much better off without that scumhole of NYC

Now California is a place that has much use.... California is so fun

As far as the most powerful city, I see conservatives removing a lot of power from DC via deep budget cuts and extreme austerity measures.

Chicago will be the most important city due to its size, but Im certain Houston would eventually become the face of America to the world as it should surpass Chicago as far as population in coming years anyway.

So without NY and LA, Houston should be the largest US city sooner than later.

Wow that would be nightmare. Not that Houston is a terrible city, but as a country's premier city, it would be sad.

Could the US make it without NY and CA? Well yeah, but would the country be the same as it is now? Not even close. NY and California are such big parts of the US economy it's not even funny. There are other strong points, but many things would change.

I'd let Boston be the ideal face of America as a respectable urban environment with a bit of everything. Not the most important city but the best rounded in terms of well everything.
