Both are near larger and more well-known cities, but have a lot to offer in their own right. (I know Oakland has a much higher population, but Ft Lauderdale feels bigger to me than its 183,000)

Which do you prefer?

I'm actually a big fan of both. Oakland has a better arts scene and is bit more urban, while Ft. Lauderdale has an amazing beachfront and a nice arts/entertainment district between the beachfront and downtown.

One disadvantage for Oakland is that it has more crime and is generally less safe than Ft. Lauderdale (although both cities clearly have 'nice' and 'bad sections'.), while a disadvantage for Ft. Lauderdale is that it has some sprawly sections.

If we could combine these 2, we'd have an incredibly awesome city.

Fort Lauderdale. The subtropical climate, palm trees and warm ocean make it more enjoyable.
