My friend and I are having a debate over which of those two cities is more dangerous. Which one has worse crime, which has more dangerous neighborhoods, which one feels safer, etc. If you have ever lived in each of those cities, been to each of them, know about each of them in general, or are just smart and want to contribute to this, please help us by giving us your input on which city is more dangerous. Thanks and hope you can help...

No you haven't. You just made this thread to start something.

But on subject, neither are very dangerous. I mean there's obviously some crime but both are relatively safe.

Minneapolis and Pittsburgh aren't even on the top 10 for Most Dangerous City, let alone their respective metros.

Instead of pretending like this is a debatable subject, let's just look at the actual numbers.

Here are the five-year and 10-year annual averages per 100K for the last 10 years for which data is available (1999-2008)

HOMICIDE 5 year: MPLS 12.86; PITT 18
HOMICIDE 10year: MPLS 12.64; PITT 16.44

RAPE 5 year: MPLS 85.62; PITT 36.32
RAPE 10year: MPLS 96.8; PITT 36.08

ROBBERY 5 year: MPLS 660.28; PITT 501.46
ROBBERY 10year: MPLS 596.65; PITT 477.82

ASSAULT 5 year: MPLS 652.28; PITT 524.76
ASSAULT 10year: MPLS 590.23; PITT 492.28

So there you have it: over the last several years the violent crime rate has been substantially lower on average, even though the murder rate in Pittsburgh has been higher.

Well use by using City-Data.com info. this is what I found. The most current data is from 2008 and is found on the city page for both places.

Note: Higher than 320.9 means more overall crime.

Pittsburgh: 544.1
Minneapolis: 673.7

So it appears Minneapolis is more dangerous.

This is a weird question, I really wouldn't feel paranoid walking around either of these cities.

The actual stats say Minneapolis by a good margin, but in my experience they're about the same. However, Pittsburgh has a much higher murder rate than Minneapolis does, I personally think Minneapolis crime rate by the stats was always WAY too high compared to how it actually was. For example I remember a few years back them saying how Minneapolis was as dangerous as Detroit which gave me a good laugh, if you're familiar with both cities there's no comparison.

I will say that N Minneapolis wasn't nearly as scary as certain areas of Pittsburgh. N Minneapolis just looks like an old suburban area gone bad, while the hill and other areas in Pittsburgh look like Camden NJ or N Philly on a hill, also from what I understand N Minneapolis is fairly safe as long as you're not involved in a gang, Pittsburgh has the gangs but I've seen that anyone is fair game there.

That depends where. There are areas in Pittsburgh where you definitely wouldn't want to walk if you aren't from that project or hood. It's not gang, it's neighborhood affiliated stuff and you'd be the easiest of targets, especially at night.

Removed. See the OP. It's not a music video thread.

I know a lot dudes like you from DC or NYC who thought they could own the streets of Cleveland b/c they were from NYC or DC and they came around me in Cudell and got clapped. Now Cleveland is a lot worse, but egos are the hoods worst enemy.

I have not been in Minn but I have traveled quite a bit and lived in Pittsburgh the majority of my life. Pittsburgh's Hill district has had a bad rep for years but the last 5 or so years it has been pretty calm. That was due to the tearing down a few troubled spots and rebuilding with new homes.
