Chicago too since it's also a majority black city.
The Eastern seaboard from Bmore(one could argue from Philly), around the gulf to Houston, most Black Americans live somewhere in that long strip of land since thats where slavery was so prevalent.
The midwest is a different situation, but still has a very large black population. Its safe to say that almost all Black Americans live east of the mississippi and and south of and including chicago.
Well 5% isn't "so black." (5-50% isn't a very useful range, it says "almost none to half"). I'm actually surprised so much of the state is less than 5%.
I meant in comparison to the rest of the country outside the South. The map indicates, outside the South, blacks are concentrated in a few zip codes, but less so in DE and Southern NJ.
Black Belt? That's a new terminology to me. Where do people come up with these sayings anyways?
It's just shorthand categorization. Like Rust Belt, Cotton Belt, Corn Belt, etc. Did you know Chicago had a "black belt" up until the 50s? It was the majority black neighborhoods that abutted the Illinois Central RR tacks up thru the South Side of the city. As you might guess, the term has fallen from use.
Should it extent to Cleveland and Detroit as well while we are at it?
No. All four cities may have large black populations, but they are surrounded by overwhelmingly white metro areas, plus they aren't part of the original homelands of American blacks.
1. Memphis TN, 670,100
2. Augusta, GA 194,149
3. Fayetteville NC 174,091
4. Jackson MS 173,861
5. Columbia SC 127,029
Even though it tends to be common knowledge here, I just wanted to say how misleading city population figures can be. Columbia is the smallest major municipality in the Black Belt, but its metro is the second largest after Memphis. You can thank restrictive SC annexation laws for that.
