My friend and I are planning a cross-country road trip in October and will be traveling between Chicago and NYC on I-80, at least that looks like the logical route. Since we don't really have time to visit Cleveland this trip but it IS about halfway on that leg, I wonder if someone could recommend a smaller town off I-80 east of Cleveland that would be interesting or have an interesting place to stay, unusual restaurant or anything to break up the boredom of a two-day freeway drive? Neither of us has ever been in Ohio so all suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

For a cool small town, I'd recommend Hudson, OH.

Try some of the towns around the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. There are several hotel options in Richfield right off of the Turnpike. The Turnpike goes right through the park.

If you're stopping in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, definitely check out Whipps Ledges at Hinckley Reservation.

I second Hudson (for the shops, restaurants and New-Englandy feel) and The Ledges. Check out Nelson's Ledges, too (I think that's what it's called.)

Downtown Peninsula has a few art galleries, a Winking Lizard (local chain of casual, pub-like restaurants) and a museum on the history of the Cuyahoga Valley. Peninsula is a cute, sleepy little canal town, that's smack dab in the middle of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a favorite spot of cyclists, runners, hikers and skiers in winter.

Check out Streetsboro for hotels. If you're in Streetsboro, go 15 min. down Route 43 to see the town of Kent, famous for Kent State University.

Peninsula is a neat little village in the park, but I can't think of any hotels there. Hudson would be good, except I don't think there are any hotels there either.

Trying to figure out what Sharon, PENNSYLVANIA has to do with NE Ohio, let alone Cleveland? If you happen to stop in Sharon, you will see why so many head across the border on routes 422 and 224 in Ohio to spend a Friday or Saturday night out... Sharon is pretty much devoid of a lot.

Nice stopping destination in Hudson. If you travel 303 westward for about 5 miles or 10 minutes of driving you will enter the national park. Hudson like a lot of NE Ohio towns has a very New England vibe to it, and a pretty awesome downtown. Plus, you will not be far from some of the other places we mentioned like Peninsula. You also have to check out the waterfalls and overlooks of the park:
