The second phase of the Horseshoe has been pretty quiet, or am I just out of the loop? Does anyone have any update?

Hi!

Dan Gilbert said the following in May 2012:

“Phase II is definitely happening,” said Gilbert. “We have an initial design of that building. We wanted just to get open here [on Phase I], work out any kinks we have operationally, then we'll be moving full steam ahead on the design and planning of Phase II.”

“We paid $85 million for the land so we're certainly not going to sit there and watch weeds grow on it,” he said.

So the guy who heads the organization says: “Phase II is definitely happening. We have an initial design of that building. We wanted just to get open here [on Phase I], work out any kinks we have operationally, then we'll be moving full steam ahead on the design and planning of Phase II.”

They've also purchased the land for $85 million. And that isn't "word" enough for you?

O come on CC. Because rich developers never change their minds?
That was in May. That was back in the rah rah rah honeymoon phase.
Now that the casino is open, now that we have hard sales numbers, can this town support an ever LARGER casino? Talk to us, Dan. Is there going to be a Phase 2? Do we NEED a phase 2? Can we support a phase 2?

I kind of hope Phase 2 doesn't happen. I think the casino is in a good spot now- it doesn't need to move and we don't need a second one. The flats are starting come come back a little bit, but I'd rather see something else in that space. Let's get inventive!

Sure they change their minds. But that doesn't mean there hasn't been any "word" of phase 2 as there most certainly has been.

Also, the May opening was barely 6 months ago. Some of you are acting like phase 1 has been open for 5 years.

I wouldn't blame Gilbert if he didn't open phase 2. However he will use the land for something. Casino's are a novelty at first anywhere they open, then they slowly even out once the novelty wears off. Personally I don't think Cleveland could sustain a bigger casino on top of having that casino as well, maybe if/when Cleveland grows to where it once was then maybe it could sustain two casino's

(my previous statement is based off what i've heard that he would keep the casino in the higbee building along with the PHASE 2 portion.)

Gilbert Should have a back up plan in mind with that land. He's a smart business man, he won't let the land just sit there.

Agree with Andrems. Sales are leveling off , of course, and I don't think the CLE can (or should honestly) be able to support an even larger one. I love it the way it is.

I would love to see Dan take a more commercial developer approach as he is doing in Detroit. He's buying up downtown buildings and attempting to fix them up for offices or apartments. Either way, I trust this guy to make a decision that is best for Cleveland. I have heard good things about the first phase of the casino.
