That was directed at the OP, as was most of my post besides correcting your typo. (Some people really are that bad at geography to think it's a 600 mile difference, so I'm glad you're not!) Just giving her some facts about the age demographics of Maine.

Yeah, I imagine housing's not too bad as far north as Hermon.

Default Ohioan in Maine

Hi Carol,
I was born, raised and worked my entire career in Ohio. I now live in the western Mountains of Maine. Here's how things are weather wise here. Maine is a big state and most of the population lives near the coast. Since you vacation here and you mention lobster and NOT skiing, I assume you are talking coastal Maine. Just as there's a difference in weather between northern Ohio and southern Ohio, there's an even bigger difference between coastal Maine and interior Maine. The coast often experiences rain when the interior part of the state gets snow. Or, they get "wetter" snow. But make no mistake, they do get snow. There are 4 seasons here as in Ohio but they are not anywhere evenly divided. The winter here is much longer. While in Ohio we see daffodils popping up their heads in late March, it's still the dead of winter in Maine. Winter lingers here into April and then slides into what they call "mud season" or spring. Because there is so much snow here, it takes several weeks for the ground to absorb it all-thus the mud. And yes, make no mistake, there is more snow here on an annual basis than in Ohio. Summers are very nice with much less humidity than you experience in Ohio. Unfortunately, summer though is just June, July and August in Maine. Generally by September, the days are cooling down and you need a sweater or hoodie at night. (I LIVE in hoodies, I think) It is EXPENSIVE to live here compared to Ohio. Remember paying for last year's car tags? I paid $1100+ for mine in 2013! Yes, you read that right. Taxes here are out of sight. Not to mention the cost of heating, which is astronomical compared to Ohio. Groceries are a lot more expensive, and unless you live near one of the larger cities, you will be shocked by the lack of shopping. Maine is beautiful, the people are wonderful and the pace is easy. But the winters are long, often frigid and it's not a bargain.

The biggest concern in a move to Maine is the job market and not the winters. I am planning to move back after I retire because my home town has no jobs.
