I've been living in Medina for almost a year. The historic square is so pleasant and quaint. I would love it if it were more diverse. I'm African American. There are almost no ethnic restaurants or other races. I'm surprised the city isn't way more diverse, since it's very close to Akron and Cleveland.

One possible explanation is that minorities like to live where there are greater concentrations of other minorities.

Solon has significantly higher household incomes than Medina and significantly higher minority populations, so it's not likely economics that accounts for the greater diversity in Solon versus Medina.

However, job availability may be an explanation.

Another thought that comes to my mind is that it may have something to do with the historical east/west divide in Greater Cleveland, just extended to more southern suburbs.

Just guessing, but it's an interesting question.

Because it is still basically a hick town. The whole of Medina County has less people in it than 1/2 of Cleveland proper.

You didn't know this before moving there? I mean, one drive through there and one knows there aren't any African-Americans around.

As to why there is not much ''diversity'', most likely not much opportunity.

Exactly. It's nice but not a heck of a lot happening in general and career-economic opportunity in particular.

Former rural county turned bedroom community. Picked up people mostly spilling over from SW Cuyahoga County and far west Summit County. So it's an area that started out mostly white which was built upon an influx of people from mostly white areas.

As was pointed out before, suburbs with a closer geographic range to areas with a higher minority concentration seem to reflect that dynamic. Solon, Twinsburg, Beachwood, and so on.

I love the historic town square in Medina as well (we spent a day hanging out there over Thanksgiving break - in laws live in Medina). Hopefully you can stay there, escape to Akron or Cleveland on occasion, and support an ethnic business if/when it does arrive there.

Probably doesn't help that an outspoken former imperial wizard or grand unicorn (or whatever children's book character it is they call their leader) of the KKK lived in Medina county until his passing in 2011. Guy ran for president in the 70's and plenty of local political offices prior to that, unsuccessfully thank goodness.
