The Red line is dirty? OK, it's not pristine. Ever ride another transit system - like Chicago's? Guess what, when you build a rail transit line back in the 1920s - they start to show their age. Transit also goes through all neighborhoods, good and bad, you see it all. The red line is on par with the blue line in Chicago (from Ohare to downtown), which I rode recently. There was a guy walking from car to car (which is illegal) mumbling the same thing over and over again. He was high as a kite. No one cared.

I went to CLE and rode the Red from the airport to Tower. I loved the industrial/gritty stuff and it was not that gritty. The guy running it was super cool. There is nothing like that here. It was easy and everyone minded their own deal.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Default Welcome to Cleveland!

PB,

All the gentrifying west-side Cleveland neighborhoods (Tremont, Duck Island, Detroit Shoreway and Clifton Edgewater) and Lakewood are extremely gay-friendly and well-populated by the LGBT community. The neighborhood that most closely resembles Short North is Ohio City. You have a Red Line station at West 25th Street if you ever wanted it (e.g. Trips to Hopkins Airport, Downtown, University Circle, Little Italy). There are many gay sports leagues in Cleveland: softball, volleyball, rowing, flag football, tennis, running, etc. Feel free to private message me and I will connect you with the appropriate folks.

Have a good move!

Hello again everyone,

Thank you for the welcomes and great insights and suggestions!

I am considering Lakewood, Ohio City, Detroit Shoreway and Tremont as suggested. Is downtown safe to live in?
It has, however, been extremely challenging to find a room/apt for a lease or sublet. Even the craigslist ads are far and few. Other cities are flooded with lists, but Cleveland seems to have very few, and a lot of it is spam.

Are there any popular beaches in CLE? I know the water will be cold. Are there running/bike trails along the lake?

I understand that a lot of public transport systems can be unaesthetic, and may have unruly passengers at times, I was just stating my observations. It's better to have rapid transit than not have it.

Thank you.

I'm not an expert, but when in Lakewood last Dec. at the park, there seemed to be a jogging path along the river.

I like your list so please keep us informed.

PB, Downtown Cleveland is safe...you are moving from Short North in Columbus, so I presume you are accustomed to urban living. The rental market in Cleveland is very tight because you are looking in some of the most desirable and gentrifying residential markets in the region (Downtown to Lakewood). Edgewater Park has a beach and the Cleveland Metroparks have taken over several lakefront parks recently with positive results. There are other beaches along Lake Erie in Cleveland, suburban and exurban communities. Beach water quality data and alerts, is available from the Ohio Department of Health's (ODH's) Beach Monitoring Program (https://www.odh.ohio.gov/odhprograms.../beachmon.aspx). There are walking and jogging paths in Edgewater Park and throughout the Cleveland Metroparks. Here is a link to additional information about Metroparks' hiking and walking trails: Hiking and Walking | Recreation | Cleveland Metroparks.

Have a good move!

Hi Everyone,

I am close to sealing the deal on an affordable single bedroom in Little Italy. Would I enjoy that area keeping in mind the things that I am looking for (young professionals, nightlife, gay or gay-friendly, safe, gentrified neighborhood?

This is only for a 3-month summer sublet, so I could move to Tremont/Ohio City/Lakewood if I choose to once I am in the city. Right now it is hard looking for places in those neighborhoods from the internet.

Thank you!

"Right now it is hard looking for places in those neighborhoods from the internet."

That's because demand is so high in these desirable neighborhoods. Little Italy is a great part of town though.

Hope you can make it over to the near westside soon!

Perhaps bounce your Little Italy decision off those at the LGBT Community Center. See post 2.

Noted nightlife options with live music in the area would include Nighttown (Cleveland's top jazz club), Grog Shop, Euclid Tavern and the Barking Spider.

Once the Little Italy Red Line station opens, there will be very easy access to downtown and the Market District. Currently, however, it's only a short walk to the University Circle station.
