I know a surge in crime is generally associated with gentrifying neighborhoods that have hit the sort of "middle" stage of gentrifying. Generally it's property crime (bike thefts, car break-ins, tire thefts, etc.) but there are also some robberies. You're seeing this stuff happening right now in Detroit-Shoreway, specifically in the Edgewater Hill / Battery Park areas north of Gordon Square where a high concentration of wealth has developed pretty rapidly. The crime trends can be exacerbated or mitigated depending on how the neighborhood develops (integrating new wealth and engaging existing residents vs concentrating new wealth and alienating or displacing existing residents).

So I can't speak exactly to the area you're referring, but it could have something to do with a socioeconomic shift in the area. It could also just be part of a larger crime trend on the west side. I haven't had the chance to talk to anyone in law enforcement about this, but it seems that crime patterns are very nebulous right now as so many neighborhoods are changing. I'm hoping the smaller-scale investment in places like lower Detroit-Shoreway (Colgate Avenue, for example) and socially-focused improvements in Clark-Fulton are able to drum up more neighborhood investment without raising as many class conflict issues as the development in upper Detroit-Shoreway/Gordon Square. A positive outcome would also benefit Old Brooklyn since they're neighbors.
Interesting that you point out it may have to do the the neighborhood changing. I surely hope it's changing for the better. I got these stats off of mylocalcrime.com, for the area in the last 30 days, there were 3 assaults, 4 thefts, and 1 burglary. Also, just found on Twitter that they held a community safety meeting yesterday. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/827019265920344066

An assault can be two guys fighting.
A theft can be a bike.

I'm not the type to get into fights and I put my stuff away at night.

For a total month, that's not bad IMO for an area.

Heck, public indecency can be a guy taking a leak behind a tree. Not a threat, but not something you want to see everyday.

Sometimes I wonder about these terms to "label" a crime. Not saying it's perfect, but not walking down the street at midnight drunk as a skunk, helps you stay out of trouble.

At the same time, it could be random muggings or and bikes are expensive.

I've had my bike stolen, happened 2 years ago. Sawed the lock off in the back of the house in the yard. It was sad realizing I don't live in a neighborhood where you can lock something in your back yard and not be sure it'll be there tomorrow. I don't blame people for wanting to avoid this stuff.

I agree with this. All crime is bad crime, though some are worse than others of course.

Agreed. Sawing a bike lock is pretty bold. Out here, when you camp, you chain your Honda EU generators to the RV, or store them inside. It's like your bike story.

Sorry about the bike. They can be a serious investment.

Bike theft is a popular crime because they're so easy to take, generally pretty valuable, and almost no one records the serial number of their bike so it's generally not possible to (legally) recover them.

It's unfortunate, but tends to be an urban issue that exceeds specific neighborhood boundaries.

There's a UCSB graduate here that invented a tracking device for bikes. I've seen his ad. UCSB is notorious for people just taking a bike when they need to get across campus. It tracks the bike to your phone and then you just show up. His ad is pretty funny. He shows up at a college dorm asking for his bike and it's right there. Might want to look into it.

That is a great idea! I'm sure those people are making a killing with that.

Found it:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/trackr-bravo#/

It's a little bigger than I thought, but they show you how to install it under and inside a seat.

The area is getting rundown and scary. The streets between broadview and state near the old RTA bus garage. My parents just moved out of there after living there for 35 years.
