Cleveland has a ringer on the nominating board in Alan Sironen, but it's still a great honor to be one of the nominees.

Vote- Best Zoo Nominees: 2017 10Best Readers' Choice Travel Awards

A few years ago, when USA Today last did this popularity poll, the Toledo Zoo won as it's probably the best zoo available to the Detroit MSA and extremely popular as a top attraction in northwest Ohio. As Toledo is a relatively small zoo, it's number one ranking likely embarrassed the overseers of this popularity contest as strangely Toledo wasn't even included in this year's survey.

I'm voting for Cleveland just to boost it in the polls, but it's not one of the five best zoos in the U.S. What bothers me about Cleveland's zoo is the paucity of animals and the embarrassing penguin exhibit. I remember when Monkey Island had probably 40 monkeys, although perhaps that was cruel.

The Rainforest, African Elephant Crossing, and the animal hospital are wonderful exhibits. I haven't seen the new tiger exhibit. Also, the Columbus Zoo is not as superior to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo as many maintain IMO.

This. It was kinda sad living in Columbus, hearing constant hype about their glorious zoo. Then I went there. It's just a big zoo. I guess it's nice. Not life changing.

I have visited many zoos, some small and some large. Cleveland is, by far in my opinion, one of the nicest mid-size zoo I have visited. I have visited the Erie Zoo, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Cincinnati Zoo, Louisville Zoo, Akron Zoo, Florida Zoo (Miami), Gulf Shores Zoo and I truly enjoy the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo the most. I actually miss the long walk to the Primate and Cats building!
