I know. I sometimes get excited when I see what I think is a "new" thread, only to be disappointed to read that it was from some time ago. All that being said, if you want to be one of those yahoos who loves taking the train and not driving a car, by all means move to Chicago. If you want an affordable place to live with no traffic, move to Cleveland.

Why is a person "who loves taking the train and not driving a car" a "yahoo"?

I didn't mean to disparage people who take a train to work or something like that, I just am sick of people from Chicago and New York who act like they are better than everyone else because they don't drive a car and outside of the city there is absolutely nothing to do, like everyone in the rest of America just watches paint dry all day.

I think that people who live in places like Chicago and New York do exactly what everyone else in the world does: rationalize their position based on what they perceive as a set of benefits. However, yes, I do agree that the "big city" elitism does tend to get old. The worst offenders tend to be the ones who moved away to a place like Chicago/NYC as they will likely never admit that the grass isn't much greener in a place like that. Moving from Cleveland to Chicago pretty much means that certain pros and cons will just swap places in their respective lists.

You'll definitely find that in Chicago and NYC.

I'll agree with some other posts that many people in these large cities lead lives that are no better than those in other locales, although they are reluctant to admit it. Life in major cities like Chicago is tough, as the COL is very high. Besides this, it's more of a grind in the sense that commutes can be longer, parking harder to find, etc. This adds to the extra financial burden, which is also exaggerated with respect to the salary differential (between less expensive cities).

I agree, I could never do it, but as someone else said, it has its pros. One simply must decide what's important to them and choose a place to live based on that. I won't begrudge anyone their choice as long as they aren't insisting that it's better than what I've chosen.
