Hey all!

This time I am staying in Mentor. I have never stayed this far east of CLE. It's for business as I'm sponsoring an event.

I should have some downtime. I know it's not spring, but I like to get around.

I see Kirtland and a few other spots that have been suggested on the forum.

Any that I SHOULD hit while there?

I am there Thursday to Saturday.

In May, I'll return for baseball and stay downtown as usual.

Thanks! Rob

Here's one idea in Mentor -- Jame A Garfield Presidential House:

A couple other thoughts depending on the weather:

Squire's Castle:

Holden Arboretum:

This Thursday to Saturday?

Although barren of visitors, unlike the summer throngs, and likely covered with driftwood as it is off-season with no beach cleaning, perhaps check out Mentor Headlands Beach State Park. Note the Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve at the east end of the park.

The James A. Garfield National Historical Park is very, very good. Watch the video in the small museum. The Garfield house largely contains original Garfield family furnishings, evidently fairly unique among 19th century Presidential residences in the NPS.

If you like old-fashioned hardware stores, Joughin's in Painesville likely is the best in northern Ohio outside of Amish country. Parking isn't an issue. There's now a lot just north of the store.

The Kirtland Temple in Kirtland is another of northern Ohio's top historical attractions. Click on traveler-rated here:

This isn't the best time of year to visit Holden Arboretum, but it still would be a beautiful place. Its canopy walk and emergent tower don't re-open until April 1.

Lake Metroparks Farmpark has added a third maple sugaring weekend (I checked, even though the details on the website isn't working). If you've never visited a maple sugar bush, this is your chance.

Lake County Park Event Calendar - Lake Metroparks | Lake Metroparks

Penitentiary Glen with its wildlife center is a good visit when heading to either Holden or the Farmpark.

Perhaps check out Fairport Harbor, although it's more hopping in the summer when the beach is open. Surprisingly, the Pompadour in Fairport Harbor is one of the best tapas bars in Greater Cleveland.

You can dine on lake perch at Brennan's Fish House in Grand River. It will be jammed on Friday night. Across the street, next to Pickle Bill's, is a small public pocket park where you can check out the Grand River, both a commercial port and a major marina area in summer months.

Perkins Restaurant in Painesville also offers perch on Friday's all day during Lent.

Painesville with its large Mexican immigrant population reportedly offers the most authentic Mexican food in Greater Cleveland. La Mexicana, with its El Senor's Tacos take-out stand in the Mexican grocery on East Washington St., often receives rave reviews from authentic Mexican food aficionados.

See Kirtland, Mentor and Lake Erie beaches here.

The 47th Annual Lakeland Jazz Festival is this coming weekend at Lakeland Community College, located just south of I-90 on Route 306.

If you go to the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks off Route 91 south of I-90, be certain to check out the National Natural Landmark there (again not the best time of year to visit). Squire's Castle is popular with kids but isn't worth the trip IMO for an adult, especially given the other options in Lake County.

Mentor Marsh and Holden's Natural Areas are the other two National Natural Landmarks in Lake County.

Good luck!

Please provide a trip report!

Too bad you aren’t here Sunday. You will be missing one of the best Saint Patrick’s day parade/party in the country!

Seriously!

You may want to considering extending your flight an extra day to experience this annual Cleveland tradition! A parade since 1845.

Cleveland's St. Patrick's Day Parade: Parade Route

100,000s of people downtown each year.

Yes, and given that St. Patrick's is on a Sunday it should be unusually crowded, esp if the weather is decent. It is by far RTA's most used day each year, esp the Rapid.

Wish I could, but have an appointment Sunday here at 10 AM and then a sports banquet that night.

El Senor's for the win! This is just like back home pretty much. Love the sign (hand written) and no BS. They were surprised I could speak Spanish when they greeted me with, "Hola!" I took a pic with the nice lady and my tacos. Thanks for the recommendation. I also drove downtown Painsville for the first time so that was cool.

I guess I'll have to go back to El Senor's. After a few visits, I thought whatever I ordered (likely tacos) was too greasy. Is that typical of authentic Mexican food?

I didn't mention the copper dome on the Painesville City Hall, which was the Lake County Court House in the 19th century. It's chemically treated so that it never develops a green patina. I've never seen that anywhere else, but I suspect it's not unusual. Hopefully you saw it, because it's striking.
